ESMO Congress Department

I am a fresh graduate from Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta,

Indonesia. I currently work as a Research Assistant at Haematology and Medical Oncology
Division at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

This is the first time I submit my paper to attend ESMO congress, but before I already
attended the similar event, which are 7 th Biannual International Symposium on
Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, 23rd Asia Pacific Cancer Conference (APCC), and 42rd Annual
Meeting of Korean Cancer Association with International Cancer Conference. Furthermore,
in 23rd APCC I got achievement as one of the best young presenters.

Knowing the fact that cancer survival in developing countries, including Indonesia, is lower
compared to developed countries. I always curious try to analyse this kind of situation and
search for predictive and prognostic factor in cancer cases. Learning about predictive and
prognostic factor in cancer cases can lead us to give the best treatment approach. Also,
cancer treatment in Indonesia is not an easy thing. There is still limitation in cancer
treatment. Increasing number of patient that did not followed by increasing treatment
facilities is one of a huge problem that we faced nowadays. It will lead to decrease survival
of patient with cancer.

My current topic is titled The Impact of National Health Insurance of Indonesia on the
Treatment of Patients with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma. This study is tried to evaluate
impact of introducing national health insurance programme in 2014 to treatment patients with
nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It provides a better access for patient to get cancer treatment,
but is not followed by improve of treatment facilities. As a result, hypothetically it will delay
the treatment and lower patient survival.

From this study, I hope it gives enlightenment about problem in introducing National Health
Insurance programme in a country, especially in Asia. Also, from this congress, I hope I can
discuss with many experts about this problem and find a solution from another country
experience.

I never been awarded an ESMO travel grant, but from this congress, I hope I can learn and
build a relationship with a wide range of people in an international sphere. This opportunity
also will give me a great advantage in pursuing a career on medical oncology field.

Best Regards,

Guntara Khuzairi
