Course Description
All of the compositions in this course are to be learned aurally. Students are expected to memorize
the material then be able to improvise on it. The major difference between this course and other
jazz repertoire courses is that the material is based on rock and funk rhythms, not swing. The
course enables musicians to play together as a group, and gives them an understanding of their
respective instruments role in an ensemble setting. Students are encouraged to explore different
approaches to improvising on the material using various melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic
concepts.
