Outreach
Hello Everyone,
July 22/29 @ 9:00 am
JOAD/AAA We are just under one month and
Aug 1 @ 7 pm counting until the B.C. shoot!
Board Meeting Range preparation is ongoing as we
try to get everything done. Jim,
Fri, Aug 4 @ 9:00 am
Special Work Party Marsha, Olinda and I have all spent
at least one Wednesday this past month working on getting our 3D
Aug 5/6 @ ALL DAY dinosaurs ready for their big day. Even this last Saturday at our July
1 Million B.C. Shoot*
work party, we had a lot of work going on with those dinosaurs. A
Aug 12 @ 9:00 am few more tweaks, and Im sure theyll be ready for their big day.
Work Party
Id like to take some space now to remind everyone about our no dog
Aug 13 @ 8:00 am
Club Shoot - 900* policy. The reason we are not allowed to bring our dogs to the range,
and why we need to remind others to leave theirs at home, is that the
Sharp Park Trust properties have been designated as a Wildlife
Protection Area. This designation imposes certain restrictions on
Local Shoots approved activities, that lucky for us, do not include archery.
Unfortunately, they do prohibit dogs and certain other animals. I do
July 16 @ 7:00 am
not want people going out of their way to police the properties
Mt. Madonna Bug Shoot* adjacent to the archery range that we do not control, but if you do
see someone on the archery range with their dog, it is our duty as
July 23 @ 8:30 am stewards to remind them that the dogs are not allowed.
Santa Cruz Archers Aloha 3D

Aug 13 @ 8:00 am As a final note, it was great to see so many shooters at the Club
BHU Primitive* Shoot this last Sunday. From what Spencer told me, we had 39
Aug 20 @ 7:30 am
shooters. Quite a few of which were visitors from other clubs. I
Mt. Madonna Zombie* would like to thank those that have put in the work to make the club
shoots this year a success. Its always fun to compete amongst friends
and I hope that if you havent had a chance to come out and play,
that you still give it a shot. There are still a few more club shoots

before the end of the year.

Take care and be safe out there,

Archers Beat The Heat at

July Safari Club Shoot
Contributed by SFA Board Member, Spencer

While most of California experienced

record high temperatures over the
weekend, resourceful archers escaped
the heat by participating in the Safari
Club Shoot last Sunday. The San
Francisco Archers hosted their last
Spot Hogg Safari Club Shoot of the
2017 season under a nice and cool
blanket of fog and temperatures that
never rose above 64 degrees.

Morning registration was busy but lively as Club Cub Sarah Spencer and her dad greeted
and registered 39 archers from near and far, including many local shooters, several
members of Oakland's Redwood Bowmen, and 2 BHFSL archers from Salinas and Turlock.
Morning warmups took place on the freshly manicured practice range while archers talked
and laughed waiting for the9amshooters meeting and ocial start. After a brief
explanation of the days format and rules, the archers headed out in groups for a shotgun
start on the White Range to find 28 freshly hung Spot Hogg Safari Animal targets set out
at distances from 25 feet, all the way out to 70 yards.
Special Thanks go out to all of the members who came
out the day before to do some heavy pruning and clearing
at the work party to get the range ready for the club
shoot. Great job everyone, it looked beautiful.

The shoot ran smoothly and at an unusually quickened

pace as archers finished the course and began turning in
scorecards right around lunchtime. By2:30pm, all the
archers had completed the round and as scorecards were
being tallied, it was discovered that a shoot off was
necessary to determine a winner in one of the categories.

Including the shoot off winner, the ocial club shoot

standings are as follows: The Arizpe family showed up in
force today as Aaliyah Arizpe shot 1st Place in F Cub Rec, with Hafsah Arizpe taking 2nd,
and Aisha Arizpe taking 3rd. In F Y Rec, Fatima Arizpe shot 1st Place. In F Y FS, Auralia
McCollum shot 1st Place. In F YA FS, Jaya Reddy shot 1st Place. In F A FS, Debi Krezman

shot 1st Place. Kelly Eagleton drove all the way up

from Turlock to shoot her way to 1st Place in F A
BHFSL. In F S FS, Marsha Quan shot 1st Place. In
F A Rec, Mrs. Olinda Killpack shot 1st Place,
Amber Adams took 2nd, and Publications Ocer
Brandi de Garmeaux took 3rd.

In M A FITA, Derrick Yim shot 1st Place as

Elliott Lee experienced a catastrophic equipment
failure and had to drop out of competition. Better
luck next time, Elliott. In M A Rec, Board
MemberSpencershot 1st Place, with Daniel
Miller taking 2nd. Mike Gonzales drove all the
way up from Salinas to shoot 1st Place in M A
BHFSL. In M SS BHFS, Range Captain Jim Long
shot 1st Place. In M MS BHFS, VP of Hunting
Harry Brown shot 1st Place. In M S BHFS, Tony
Parra shot 1st Place. In M SS FS, Mike Lew shot
1st Place. Rudy Sandoval surprised everyone by
switching bow styles and shot his way to 1st Place in M A BHFS with his new Hoyt Carbon
Defiant 34. Tony Davis edged out Anthony Padin by 6 points to capture 2nd, and Anthony
took 3rd. Great round gentlemen. In M A FS, the day belonged to Emerson Munkres, who
shot his way passed the field taking 1st Place with
the high score of the round, a blazing 916 out of
924. 2nd Place went to Wendell Souza who
finished just 7 points behind Emerson. 3rd place
had to be decided in a rare but exciting shoot o
when John Keating and Club President Randall
Killpack both tied with a 903. The matter was
settled on the practice range in front of a crowd
who gathered to witness as John managed to
place his shot closer to the X than Randall from
61 yards out.

Congratulations to all of the days winners, and a

heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and made the shoot such a success. We
at SFA hope you all had fun and enjoyed the beautiful range and cooler temperatures!

July Work Party

Thank you to all those who showed up for the July Work
Party to make the White Range shootable for the Safari
Club Shoot and continue preparing for the B.C. Shoot
in August. Randall, Olinda, Jaya and Auralia worked on
the BC dinos; Big John Nazareno drove the riding
mower; Spencer cut back #26 white and, as usual, Jim
Long was everywhere! Pat and Allen made a big lunch
for the whole gang. After the work party, Jaya, Auralia &
Joseph hung Safari targets on 15- 28, and Sarah and
Spencer encountered some of the native wildlife while
hanging targets 1 - 14 and setting out all the flags. The
eorts of the members who attend work parties and
contribute what theyre capable of is very appreciated by
all and directly contributes not only to the beauty of our
range, but the comradery and morale of the Club.

know Im not in the right spot (hello forest!).

Then a friend mentioned that they draw to the spot, which I

realized is what I used to do when the anchoring issue arose. I
tried it again, and heres the result:

~ draw straight on, anchor no problem, cant get to the aiming spot
~ draw to aiming spot, cant anchor

At this point, Im a little bit at a loss of what to do next, but Im

going to keep trying. So now you know why my 32 lb limbs are for
sale and why Im rollin with my wood bow. Stay tuned!
