THIS WEEKS TUTORIAL : NUMBER OF MOLE 2

CIKGU S.MURALI
1. The mass of one mole of any substance is known as molar mass ( RAM / RMM/ RFM ).

2. Thus, the molar mass = RMM = contains 6.02 x 1023 particles [atom / molecule /
ions ] .
3. The unit of molar mass is gram ( g )
4. For example:
Molar mass of aluminium = 27 g
Molar mass of carbon = 12 g
Molar mass of a hydrogen atom =Ig
Molar mass of copper = 64 g
Thus, 27 g aluminium, 12 g of carbon, 1 g hydrogen atom, and 64 g copper has the same
number of atoms which is 6.02 x 1023 (Avogadro constant)
5. Other examples, if
(a) the relative atomic mass of oxygen, O, is 16, so the molar mass of an oxygen atom is 16g.
(b) the relative molecular mass of oxygen, O2, is 16 x 2 = 32, thus the molar mass for an
oxygen molecule is 32 g.
(c) the relative formula mass of sodium chloride, NaCl, is 23 + 35.5 = 58.5, thus the molar
mass for sodium chloride is 58.5 g.
