SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART AND CRAFTS


GRADE 8 ART

Content Standard: Demonstrates understanding of the salient features of the arts of


Southeast Asia by showing the relationship of the elements of art and processes among
culturally diverse communities in the region

Performance Standard: Create artworks showing the characteristic elements of the arts
of Southeast Asia

I. Objectives
A. Describe the different arts and crafts of Southeast Asian Countries
through their characteristics.
B. Appreciates the value of having own identity of arts and crafts.
C. Show creativity through replicating arts and crafts of various countries of
Southeast Asia.

A. Main Concept: Southeast Asian Culture
B. Sub-Concept: Arts and Crafts of Southeast Asian Countries
C. Materials: Speaker, Laptop, Projector, Android Phone, handouts

o Daily Sharing, each day, a student will share short new knowledge
to the class.

very much interesting since
were on 21st century world that
everything is digital, that we,
the students, wants to learn
such process of artwork.

try to have discussion on digital art.

B(1) Activity: You Complete Me!

o Puzzle, the class will be divided into four (4), each group will have
different art from different Southeast Asian countries, after they
completed the puzzle, they will discuss some insights about the
picture that they made.

groupmates? You should, because its
just your seatmates.

Now, form a circle to your group, and I
will give sets of puzzles that you will
solve, after that, you will explain the
image that you formed. I will give you 3
to 5 minutes for the explanation, the first
group that will finish the puzzle will have
a reward.

2. Analysis
o Watch and Reflect, the students will watch a video, after that, the
teacher will ask the students about their thoughts about the video
they watched, in addition, this video aims to touch the heart of the
students so that they will appreciate more the arts and crafts of

and their arts and crafts. This is a video

Sir, I think we really need to
appreciate the works of
Southeast Asian countries,
especially our country
because as we had seen in
the video, the crafter were
very much giving their efforts
just to create the art and crafts
that we just dont appreciate
and just look at it as a kitsch,
but in reality, its not.

3. Abstraction
o Group reporting with the handouts given by the teacher, this
includes the ff:
Indonesia: Blangkons, Bone Carvings, Ivory Carvings, Horn
Earing
Malaysia: (Moon Kite or Wau) - Wau Bulan, Wau Merak,
Wau Kuching, etc.
Thailand: Ceramics
Singapore: Merlion
Cambodia: Pottery, and weaved basket
Vietnam: Ceramics, Non qual thao, and Non la
Brunei Darussalam: Headgears, and Silverwork
Myanmar: ___________
o Other countries will be discussed by the teacher, and the group
reporting will also be reinforced by the teacher.

Now, we will have a group activity, what
I mean by group activity is literally
GROUP, you should work together! Is
that clear?
Yes sir!
I have a jar of knowledge here, the
leaders will pick a Southeast Asian
country, we have Indonesia, Malaysia,
Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia,
Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, and
Myanmar. Philippines is excluded since
you already studied that in your grade 7
Art, is that correct?
Yes sir! We mastered that
already!
Your group will discuss the arts and
crafts of the country you got with the
handout that I will provide. You can do
your presentation not just by reporting,
you can also do talk shows, theater play,
readers theater, campaign, etc., It would
be better and everyone will enjoy if you
presented the topic more creative than
just talking and presenting images in the
class. Good luck everyone! *Leaders of

4. Application (Art Making)


o Sculpture out of Soap, the students will need a soap, any soap will
do, and a sculpting knife, if they have swiss knife, it would be
better. They will create a sculpture that is very much related to
specific country/ies of Southeast Asian arts and crafts.

Now that we learned why arts and crafts
of ASEAN is important, and what are
those, we will now make one of them.
What kind of artwork are we
going to do sir?
You will need to bring soap, any kind of
soap, then a sculpting knife but to be
safe, please dont use real knife, if you
have swiss knife, it would be better. I
dont want harm to any of you class.

I will give you 4 options on what will you


sculpt. These are Merlion, Horn Earing,
Pendants of Malaysia, or Teakwood
Latticework Panel. You may start now.
