Integrated solutions
for electrical power distribution in the airport

Touchdowns and takeoffs clocked by the minute, a vast number of travelers and business
people in a hurry, increasingly tighter safety regulations one thing is crucial for the
safe operation of an airport more than anything else: reliable power distribution. Only
if all systems are safely networked and electricity is available at any time, can this highly
complex organism work safely and smoothly. Totally Integrated Power creates the ideal
basis for this.

For security or booking systems, check-in, baggage transport, illumination, air-conditioning or

airfield lighting we can offer tailor-made solutions for airports. Our perfectly matched product
portfolio comprises everything for safe and economic power distribution. From the point of sup-
ply to the equipment connected: e.g. medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, low-voltage
distribution boards and motor control centers, busbar trunking systems and other kinds of dis-
tributor boxes, circuit protection devices, controlgear and monitoring devices, switches and
power outlets as well as power management systems, protection technology and drives, in addi-
tion to power automation and building automation systems. Thanks to Totally Integrated Power,
all products and systems can be integrated into an entity, ensuring constant energy flow to all
areas of the airport.

In power distribution, it is not only system reliability that counts but there is also the aspect of
economic efficiency. Besides optimal utilization of airfield capacities, a well-thought energy
concept can also have a very positive impact on the economic success of an airport. Totally
Integrated Power also proves its strength in this respect regardless of whether you wish to
build a new installation or modernize an existing one.

Totally Integrated Power TM, our concept for

end-to-end power distribution ranging from
medium-voltage to power outlets, opens up
enormous optimization potential.

From the planning stage and the installation to

normal airport operation our well-matched
products and systems ensure reliable and eco-
nomic power distribution around the clock.
Power supply at the airport can be divided into three safety levels:
Maximum safety: This level includes all areas in connection with ight operations, such as the tower and
aireld lighting. Here, uninterruptible power supply must be ensured by means of UPS systems, even if the
regular supply or the safety supply system are not available.

High safety: Areas where passengers, visitors and other persons are present, e.g. terminals, shopping areas
or car parks, require a safe power supply. Besides a stable and energy-efcient power supply, the focus is on
the protection of human life. A high degree of supply reliability also counts in areas where a longer power
outage would cause follow-up costs as well as a loss of image. This applies to logistics centers or baggage
transport, for example.

Standard safety: In areas such as maintenance hangars or the air cargo center, a standard supply is suf-
cient. This safety level cannot be compared to the standard power supply of other commercial buildings.
Standby supply systems or a redundant medium-voltage supply system are indispensable in order to bridge
bottlenecks in the main supply system or a failure of the medium-voltage distribution system. This is the
only way to ensure regular operations or to maintain a reduced level of normal operations.

Today there are two predominant concepts of electrical power supply for airports: a central safety and stand-
by power supply and a distributed one. In the case of a central standby and safety supply concept, the main
power supply as well as safety supply is provided by a medium-voltage network in the form of separate
rings. The energy supplied is only transformed into low voltage in the functional area where it is required.
Rings benet from the fact that a feeder substation for one functional area is always supplied redundantly,
i.e. in the event of a singular fault, it can still be operated. If a high degree of supply reliability and availability
must be ensured, rings operated as closed systems and featuring appropriate protective devices can provide
an immediate power reserve in the event of cable faults. High-quality, gas-insulated switchgear virtually
eliminates system faults.

The right concept for every challenge:
safe power supply to airports

Safe and efficient power distribution thanks to ultramodern plant technology

Ultramodern plant technology guarantees maximum operational safety, minimum operating
costs and minimum space requirements in the airport building. Type-tested, gas-insulated
switchgear, such as 8DA/8DB/NXPLUS C and 8DH by Siemens, are particularly well suited to this
purpose. Featuring a wide range of nominal currents and short circuit strengths, they are the
optimal solution for almost any application and requirement. They are compact, ergo space-
saving, and thanks to the fact that they require no maintenance, they mean low life cycle costs.
The better matched the plant and protection technologies are, the higher the availability of
power supply. The diversity of SIPROTEC protection technology supplied by Siemens with its
unique technology and intelligent algorithms reliably protects all equipment, ensuring selective
fault tripping even under the most difficult circumstances. Owing to their CFC logic, SIPROTEC
protection devices can be adapted to all customer requirements and demands, and they can
also be interlinked. Their integrated evaluation software helps to analyze the course of faults
recorded precisely.

Smooth supply thanks to safe substation and network control technology

Our innovative SICAM PAS and Power CC substation and network control systems visualize and
control all switching states from the airport control center, and handle a multitude of operational
alternatives and coordinate them with fault scenarios. Automated processes prevent interruption
of supply caused by maloperation. And if an interruption of power supply does happen, the fault
will be remedied quickly.

Maximum safety of supply for airfield lighting and the tower

There would be no air traffic without runway lighting. Airfield lighting and power supply to the
tower are crucial. Therefore, redundant feeding, from different grids or standby supply systems if
necessary, an uninterruptible power supply and standby generator sets with immediate power-on
readiness are so important. No maintenance, extraordinary robustness and minimum demands
on their environment, such as the ambient climate, make Siemens GEAFOL transformers the ideal
solution at the transfer points between the medium-voltage network and low-voltage distribu-
tion to feed power reliably to where it is needed at any time.

Maximum protection of persons in the main terminal and the shopping areas
Irrespective of the power source: selective, fault-discriminating protection from the point of
supply to the equipment connected, independent of the method of supply, ensures that only a
minimum number of consumers will be affected in the event of a short circuit. The Siemens com-
ponents applied for protection at all distribution levels, e.g. SENTRON circuit breakers or BETA
circuit protection devices have been optimally coordinated, switching currents safely in the event
of faults and able to discriminate between faults, thus protecting people and equipment as well
as entire plants. Moreover, SENTRON circuit breakers, which are capable of exchanging informa-
tion, allow for cost-cutting remote diagnostics via the Internet/Ethernet and transparent commu-
nication via PROFIBUS DP.
It is also indispensable for undisturbed operation to match equipment versions, cable routing
as well as power system configurations and grounding concepts. The use of well-matched sub-
systems only and a suitable overall system featuring the least possible electromagnetic inter-
ference ensure safety all around.
Personal safety and fire protection ensured
In recent years, safety requirements have also increased tremendously in the field of electrical
installations. In order to substantially reduce the fire load on the airport building complex,
SIVACON 8PS busbar trunking systems by Siemens are a good alternative to cables in many
places. Thanks to their high short circuit strength and very low fire load, they are extremely safe.
Communication-capable load feeders allow precise consumption metering, remote switching
and monitoring. SIVACON, the type-tested Siemens low-voltage switchgears with fully enclosed
functional compartments ensure a high safety standard for the protection of human life, limiting
the impact of arcing faults and fault propagation to a minimum in case of faults. The connection
between busbar and switchgear is of course type-tested, too, in SIVACON, thus forming a safe
system.

Our ALPHA distribution cabinets, suitable for use in areas where people are present, are also syn-
onymous with maximum safety. They are equipped with circuit protection devices and switches
from our BETA system range. As a renowned technology leader in the field of residual-current-
operated circuit breakers, Siemens provides a comprehensive protection concept with a broad
and well-matched product portfolio for protecting, switching, measuring and monitoring tasks.

GEAFOL transformers by Siemens can be recommended particularly for areas with maximum
safety requirements which are frequented by a large number of people. They are flame-retardant,
self-extinguishing, and do not emit toxic gases in the event of fire.

Despite a substantial reduction in the fire load due to the individual components for power distri-
bution in the building, the airport operator must be sure that he can rely 100% on the fire alarm
and protection systems installed in the airport building. Anyone who wants to guarantee that
escape route lighting and sprinkler systems always work in an emergency must combine these
systems with a reliable safety power supply system. Integrated standby systems which ensure
independence from the main power supply are a prerequisite.

Fast and reliable baggage transport without trouble

Siemens not only provides systems for careful and fast baggage transport, it also offers suffi-
cient power supply for smooth operation. A simple network structure and redundant feeders
minimize standstill times caused by power failures. Correct dimensioning of systems, networks
and equipment using the Siemens tool SIMARIS design, for example helps to reduce negative
repercussions to a minimum in the event of a fault. Type-tested SIVACON low-voltage switchgear,
designed as a Motor Control Center, is perfectly suited for connecting and controlling the drives
around the baggage transport system. Withdrawable unit design makes the replacement of com-
ponents easy and efficient since components can be flexibly replaced without interrupting nor-
mal conveyance. This also contributes considerably to reliable baggage transport.
