Totally Integrated Power Airports
Integrated solutions
for electrical power distribution in the airport
Touchdowns and takeoffs clocked by the minute, a vast number of travelers and business
people in a hurry, increasingly tighter safety regulations one thing is crucial for the
safe operation of an airport more than anything else: reliable power distribution. Only
if all systems are safely networked and electricity is available at any time, can this highly
complex organism work safely and smoothly. Totally Integrated Power creates the ideal
basis for this.
In power distribution, it is not only system reliability that counts but there is also the aspect of
economic efficiency. Besides optimal utilization of airfield capacities, a well-thought energy
concept can also have a very positive impact on the economic success of an airport. Totally
Integrated Power also proves its strength in this respect regardless of whether you wish to
build a new installation or modernize an existing one.
High safety: Areas where passengers, visitors and other persons are present, e.g. terminals, shopping areas
or car parks, require a safe power supply. Besides a stable and energy-efcient power supply, the focus is on
the protection of human life. A high degree of supply reliability also counts in areas where a longer power
outage would cause follow-up costs as well as a loss of image. This applies to logistics centers or baggage
transport, for example.
Standard safety: In areas such as maintenance hangars or the air cargo center, a standard supply is suf-
cient. This safety level cannot be compared to the standard power supply of other commercial buildings.
Standby supply systems or a redundant medium-voltage supply system are indispensable in order to bridge
bottlenecks in the main supply system or a failure of the medium-voltage distribution system. This is the
only way to ensure regular operations or to maintain a reduced level of normal operations.
Today there are two predominant concepts of electrical power supply for airports: a central safety and stand-
by power supply and a distributed one. In the case of a central standby and safety supply concept, the main
power supply as well as safety supply is provided by a medium-voltage network in the form of separate
rings. The energy supplied is only transformed into low voltage in the functional area where it is required.
Rings benet from the fact that a feeder substation for one functional area is always supplied redundantly,
i.e. in the event of a singular fault, it can still be operated. If a high degree of supply reliability and availability
must be ensured, rings operated as closed systems and featuring appropriate protective devices can provide
an immediate power reserve in the event of cable faults. High-quality, gas-insulated switchgear virtually
eliminates system faults.

Maximum protection of persons in the main terminal and the shopping areas
Irrespective of the power source: selective, fault-discriminating protection from the point of
supply to the equipment connected, independent of the method of supply, ensures that only a
minimum number of consumers will be affected in the event of a short circuit. The Siemens com-
ponents applied for protection at all distribution levels, e.g. SENTRON circuit breakers or BETA
circuit protection devices have been optimally coordinated, switching currents safely in the event
of faults and able to discriminate between faults, thus protecting people and equipment as well
as entire plants. Moreover, SENTRON circuit breakers, which are capable of exchanging informa-
tion, allow for cost-cutting remote diagnostics via the Internet/Ethernet and transparent commu-
nication via PROFIBUS DP.
It is also indispensable for undisturbed operation to match equipment versions, cable routing
as well as power system configurations and grounding concepts. The use of well-matched sub-
systems only and a suitable overall system featuring the least possible electromagnetic inter-
ference ensure safety all around.
Personal safety and fire protection ensured
In recent years, safety requirements have also increased tremendously in the field of electrical
installations. In order to substantially reduce the fire load on the airport building complex,
SIVACON 8PS busbar trunking systems by Siemens are a good alternative to cables in many
places. Thanks to their high short circuit strength and very low fire load, they are extremely safe.
Communication-capable load feeders allow precise consumption metering, remote switching
and monitoring. SIVACON, the type-tested Siemens low-voltage switchgears with fully enclosed
functional compartments ensure a high safety standard for the protection of human life, limiting
the impact of arcing faults and fault propagation to a minimum in case of faults. The connection
between busbar and switchgear is of course type-tested, too, in SIVACON, thus forming a safe
system.
Our ALPHA distribution cabinets, suitable for use in areas where people are present, are also syn-
onymous with maximum safety. They are equipped with circuit protection devices and switches
from our BETA system range. As a renowned technology leader in the field of residual-current-
operated circuit breakers, Siemens provides a comprehensive protection concept with a broad
and well-matched product portfolio for protecting, switching, measuring and monitoring tasks.
GEAFOL transformers by Siemens can be recommended particularly for areas with maximum
safety requirements which are frequented by a large number of people. They are flame-retardant,
self-extinguishing, and do not emit toxic gases in the event of fire.
Despite a substantial reduction in the fire load due to the individual components for power distri-
bution in the building, the airport operator must be sure that he can rely 100% on the fire alarm
and protection systems installed in the airport building. Anyone who wants to guarantee that
escape route lighting and sprinkler systems always work in an emergency must combine these
systems with a reliable safety power supply system. Integrated standby systems which ensure
independence from the main power supply are a prerequisite.
Less overhead: we can offer competent, personal advice and comprehensive support for electrical
planning engineers at almost every planning stage. An indispensable tool for the professional design
of electrical networks is SIMARIS design, the dimensioning software well proven in practice. This tool
facilitates the calculation of electrical networks, for example, or provides proof of selectivity and
automatically suggests well-matched equipment from our integrated product portfolio.
