ItwasintroducedtotheFilipinosbyanAmericannamedElwoodS.Brown,[1]thethenPhysicalDirectorofthe
YoungMen'sChristianAssociation(YMCA).Itbecameapopulargameheldinbackyardsandatbeachesinthe
islands.Atfirst,theFilipinosinventedtheirownrulesforthegame.[2]USsoldierswhowereassignedtothe
differentislandsofthePhilippineduringtheperiodalsohelpedinthewidespreadintroductionofvolleyballtothe
Filipinos.TheseAmericanmilitaryservicemenencouragedtheFilipinostojointheminplayingduringtheirtime
offfrommilitaryduties.[3]EarlyinthehistoryofthegameofvolleyballinthePhilippines,theFilipinosusedtrees
asmakeshiftnetholders(thenetwashungbetweenthetwochosentrees).[2]

"spikingtheball"waslikea"hit"oraformof"attack"thatcansquashor"kill"theopportunityoftheopponent

ThePhilippineAmateurVolleyballAssociation(PAVA)wasfoundedbythePlaygroundandRecreationBureau
(PRB)ofthePhilippinesonJuly4,1961.ItwasrenamedasthePhilippineVolleyballFederation(PVF)in2003.[2]
ThePVFwastherecognizedsportingbodyforvolleyballuntil2015,whenrecognitionwastransferredtothe
LarongVolleyballsaPilipinas(LVPI),followingaleadershipdisputeinthePVF.

LVPIiscurrentlythesolenationalgoverningbodyofvolleyballinthePhilippinesrecognizedasanaffiliateandan
accreditedassociationbythePhilippineOlympicCommittee(POC),theAsianVolleyballConfederation(AVC)
andtheFdrationInternationaledeVolleyball(InternationalFederationofVolleyball,FIVB).[2]
