Fernandez,FrancisArnaiz,AtoyCo,BogsAdornadoandPhilipCezarplayedforthosesquadsbeforethetwo
teamsdisbandedin1983and1984respectively.Followingtheirdisbandment,theleaguemovedfromtheAraneta
ColiseumtoULTRAinPasig.There,theleaguecontinuedtobepopular,asseveralformerToyotaandCrispa
playerssuitedupfordifferentteams.

Duringthemidtolate80s,JaworskiandGinebraSanMiguelbecametheleague'smostpopularsquadfortheir
"neversaydie"attitude.[8]TheteamhadintenserivalrieswiththeTanduayRhumMastersandJaworski'sthen
rivalFernandez,andlatertheexpansionPurefoodsCorporationandplayersAlvinPatrimonio,JerryCodiera,Jojo
LastimosaandFernandez.

Bytheendofthe1980s,SanMiguelBeerwonnumerouschampionshipsthatincludedthe1989GrandSlam,led
bycoachNormanBlackandformernationalteamstarsSamboyLimandHectorCalma.

In1989,FIBAvotedtoallowprofessionalstoplayintheirsanctionedtournaments,
hencethePBA'splayersarenowabletorepresentthecountryinternationally.In1990,
theleaguesentitsfirstallprofessionalsquadtotheAsianGames,earningasilver
medal.ThePBAwouldlatersendthreemoreallprosquadstotheevent.

Theearly1990ssawGinebraandShellforminganintenserivalrythatincluded
Ginebra'swalkoutin1990finalsagainstShellandtheteam'sdramaticcomebackfrom
a31deficittobeatShellinthe1991FirstConference.Patrimonio,AllanCaidic,and
ahostofothersbecametheleague'smainattraction.

From19992000,thePBAenduredcontroversy.Severalexpatriatecagersarrivedonthescene(suchasAsi
Taulava,DannySeigleandEricMenk).Theirlineagewasquestionableandmostofthemweredeportedfor
falsifyingdocuments.ThearrivalofdozensoftheseplayerswasacountertothefledgingMetropolitanBasketball
Association,aregionalbasedprofessionalleagueformedin1998.AfterABSCBN's2001abandonment,theMBA
facedmountingexpensesandwouldfoldwithinayear.DespitetheMBA'sdisbandmentandthearrivalofthose
playerstothePBA,attendancewentsourforthePBAin2002andwasevenworsethefollowingyear.

In2004,theleagueintroduceddrasticschedulingchanges,whenitdecidedtobegintheseasoninOctoberinstead
ofJanuary.Thechangeinstartingtheseasonallowedtheleaguetoaccommodateinternationaltournamentsheld
fromJunetoSeptemberanditfitbetterwithcollegehoops,theNCAAandtheUAAP,whoseseasonsrunfrom
JunetoOctober.Theleaguealsoreducedthenumberofconferencesfromthreetotwo,renamingtheAllFilipino
CupasthePhilippineCupandintroducinganewimportladentournamentnamedastheFiestaConference.To
accommodatethesechanges,atransitionaltournament,the2004PBAFiestaConferencewasheldfromFebruary
toJuly,whichwaswonbytheBarangayGinebraKings.TheleaguealsobegantoholdtheannualAllStar
weekendintheprovinces,alternatingfromLuzonandVisayas/Mindanaoprovinceseveryyear.

Theleagueregainedsomepopularitybythisyear,thanksinlargeparttoBarangayGinebra'sthreePBA
championshipsledbyEricMenk,JayjayHelterbrandandMarkCaguioa.Solidmarketingandarrivalofcollegiate
starsfromtheUAAPandtheNCAAalsoworkedinthePBA'sfavor.

By2005,theleaguewouldtakeontheroleofPhilippinenationalrepresentationunderChotReyes,whenFIBA
liftedthesuspensionofthecountryfollowingtheformationoftheSamahangBasketbolngPilipinasdespitea
ninthplacefinishinthe2007FIBAAsiaChampionship.In2009,however,theallamateurSmartGilasteam
becamethecountry'sofficialrepresentativeininternationalcompetitions.ThePBA'sroleinforminganational
teamwasthusreducedtosendingupreinforcementstobeefupthenationalsquad.

AftertheappointmentofChitoSalud,sonofformercommissionerRudySaludasthecommissionerofthePBA,
theleaguereturnedthethreeconferenceformatstartinginthe201011season.Thisalsousheredthereturnofthe
previouslyretiredconferences,theCommissioner'sandGovernors'cups.

Thebeginningof2010'salsosawthedominanceoftheTalk'NTextTropangTexters,whonearlygottheGrand
Slaminthe201011seasonandwonthePhilippineCupinthreeconsecutiveyears(201011,201112,201213)
enablingthemtopermanentlykeeppossessionoftheJunBernardinoTrophy,thetrophygiventothePhilippine
Cupchampions.

OnMay19,2013,thethirdgameofthePBACommissioner'sCupFinalsbetweentheAlaskaAcesandthe
BarangayGinebraSanMiguelsetthealltimebasketballattendancerecordof23,436attheSmartAraneta
Coliseum,[9]whichbrokethepreviousrecordof23,108set11daysearlierthatfeaturedthesemifinalsseries
doubleheaderbetweenAlaskavs.SanMigCoffeeandBarangayGinebravs.Talk'NText.[10]Thisrecordwas
eventuallybrokenonFebruary12,2014,whentheseventhgameofthe201314PBAPhilippineCupSemifinals
seriesbetweenBarangayGinebraSanMiguelandSanMigSuperCoffeeMixerssetthealltimebasketball
attendancerecordof24,883.[11]

The201314seasonbecamehistoricastheSanMigSuperCoffeeMixersbecamethefourthteamtowinthe
GrandSlam.TimCone,thecoachoftheCoffeeMixersalsomadehistorywhenhebecamethefirstcoachtowin
twoGrandSlams.

Forthe201415season,theleagueexpandedtotwelveteams,afteracceptingtwonewfranchises:KiaSorentoand
BlackwaterElite.TheleaguehelditsopeningceremoniesatthePhilippineArenaandsetanalltimePhilippine

OnFebruary15,2015,inthemiddleofthe201415PBAseason,commissionerChitoSaludannouncedthathe
willstepdownastheleague'scommissionerandwassucceededbyChitoNarvasastartingthe201516PBA
season.SaludwasthenappointedasthePresidentandCEOoftheleague,whentheboardofgovernorsdecidedto
restructuretheleagueandcreatethePresident/CEOpositiontomanagetheleague'smarketing,expansionand
businessrelatedmatters.TheCommissioner(whowillalsobetheleague'sChiefOperatingOfficer)willhandle
gamerelatedmatters.

Salud,however,alsosteppeddownastheleague'sPresidentandCEOonDecember31,2015andwasreplacedby
incumbentPBAchairmanRobertNon.TheboardofgovernorslaterappointedChitoNarvasaasthePresidentand
CEO.Thesaidpositionwaseventuallydissolvedbeforethestartofthe2016Governors'Cup.

Seasonformat
Unlikeotherleagues,thereisno"seasonchampion"ofthePBA.Instead,theseasonisdividedintoconferencesor
tournaments(nottobeconfusedwiththedefinitionofa"conference"inasportingcontextasagroupingofteams
basedongeographyorhistoricalaffiliation),whereintheteamscompeteforaconferencecup.Thewinnersofthe
conferencecupsdonotfaceeachotherattheendoftheseasontodeterminetheseasoninsteadallconference
championsareleaguechampions,withthePhilippineCupbeingthemostprestigiousconferenceoftheseason.

Aseasonisusuallycomposedofthreeconferences.Sincethe201011season,theconferenceswerenamed
Philippine,Commissioner'sandGovernors'Cups,usuallyendinginabestofsevenserieswherethewinnertook
theconferencecup.Ifthesameteamwonalloftheconferences,theteamwassaidtobethe"GrandSlam"
champion.AdraftisheldaftertheseasonendingGovernors'Cup.Anopeningceremonyisheldbeforethestartof
thefirstgameoftheseason.

Teams
Allfranchisesareownedbycorporations.Theyarenotbasedongeographiclocale,sotheydonotplayina"home
stadium".Theleaguerentsthedifferentstadiumsinwhichtheteamsplay.

Ateam'snameisoftendividedintothreepartsthefirstisthecompanyname,thentheproduct,thenanickname
usuallyconnectedtothebusinessofthecompany.Forexample,theSanMigSuperCoffeeMixers(currently
knownastheStarHotshots)isateamownedbySanMiguelPureFoodsCompany,Inc.,withthe"coffeemixers"
nicknamedenotingtheSanMigSuperCoffeeproduct.Productnamesaresometimesomittedormergedwiththe
team'snickname.Thoughthecompanynamerarelychanges,theproductnameandnicknamechangefrequently,
maximizingthepublicitythattheleaguecangivetoacompany'sgoods.

BarangayGinebraownsthedistinctionofbeingthemostpopularteamintheleague.Itspopularitycanbetracedto
therecruitmentofthebackcourttandemofRobertJaworskiandFrancisArnaiz,bothformerToyotaplayers.Fans
ofToyotafollowedthetwostalwartstoGinebraaftertheToyotateamdisbandedin1983.[13]

In2008,however,asurveyshowedthatPurefoodssharesthehonoroftheleague'smostpopularballclubwith
Ginebra.[14][15][16]ItappearedthatGinebrawasthemostpopularteamamongmen,whilePurefoodswasthemost
popularamongwomen.[17]Also,GinebrawasmorepopularinMetroManilaandLuzonandinclassesABC,while
PurefoodswasmorepopularinVisayasandMindanaoandinclassD.Thetwoteamsweretiedformostsupporters
inclassE.[18]Intermsofpercentageofsupporters,thesurveyshowedthat,afterGinebraandPurefoods(which
bothgot31%),[19]areMagnolia(21%),Alaska(13%),Sta.Lucia(5%),RedBull(4%),TalkN'Text(3%),Coca
Cola(1%),andAir21(1%).[20]

Notably,thetopthreeteamsthathavethemostsupportershavealsobeenconsideredasthemosttalentladen
teams.TheyalsofallundertheSanMiguelCorporationumbrella.Withthesethreeteamsacquiringplayers
