Preparation
Duplicate one worksheet per pair. Cut the worksheet
in half for Student A and Student B.
Procedure
1. Tell students that they are going to put a conversation
between two people in order and then report what the
people said.
2. Put students in pairs. Give each student half the
worksheet, Student A or Student B. Tell them not to
show their half of the worksheet to their partner. Read the
introduction to the situation with the whole class. Invite a
Student A to read Mikes first sentence. Ask a Student B
to read Julies reply. Then ask Students A: What do you
think Mike says next? (I see that, but Im in a bit of a
hurry right now.) Have Students A write the number 2 in
the space before the sentence.
3. Students continue working in pairs to put the conversation
in order. They write the correct numbers in the blanks.
4. Have students change and work with a new partner, still
in Student A / Student B pairs. Students now report the
conversation to the new partner. Student A reports what
Mike said, and Student B reports what Julie said. Student
A begins by saying: Mike told Julie that he wanted to ask
her a question. Student B says: Julie said that she was
sorry, but she was in a hurry because she had to finish a
project. Students continue to report the conversation. If
students dont agree about the order of the conversation,

they should stop and figure out the best order and then
continue.
