Subject: Physical Education Time Frame: 3-4 weeks (5 day wk / 50 min day)
Objectives:
The students will
Learn about and participate in different activities they can continue in for their entire lives.
Understand the benefits of each activity and how they correlate to living a healthy and active
lifestyle.
Distinguish what a healthy diet should consist of.
Analyze the new health and fitness trends using modern technology (internet, apps, etc.)
Understand how technology can be used to improve fitness by way of calculation, information,
development, and organization.
Discover activities they enjoy and find ways to incorporate them into everyday life.

Procedures: Intelligences:
Lesson 1: !
Introduction to Lifelong Fitness (Trends). The instructor will introduce a Verbal, Logical,
few new fitness trends and show an array of videos introducing this new Interpersonal
unit. In a class discussion, the students will talk about what is changing and !
how these changes benefit our bodies. Students will then pull out their !
iPads and read a few short internet articles on fitness trends. They will post !
their findings in a google doc. !

Lesson 2: !
Fitness Trends Cont.- The students will now review their findings in a class Interpersonal, Visual
discussion. The instructor will split the class into groups of 3-4. Each group !
will choose on particular fitness trend they would like to focus on. They !
will research this topic and put together a PowerPoint/Keynote. If needed, !
for homework, students will meet on Skype or a Google Hangout and finish !
up their slides and plan out their presentations. !

Lesson 3: !
Fitness Trends (continued)- Groups will present their PowerPoint/Keynote Verbal, Interpersonal,
to the class. Each presentation will be no longer than 5 minutes. The Intrapersonal
students in the audience will take notes on one of their iPad apps (noteshelf, !
etc.) and keep a journal of all the new trends to look back on. !

Lesson 4: !
Nutrition- The instructor will now tie in fitness trends with nutrition. The Kinesthetic, Naturalist,
instructor will introduce nutrition and speak very briefly about food groups Interpersonal
and how proper foods fuel workouts and exercise. Students will point out !
what they feel are the problems will general teen diets and structure a !
possible solution to this. The discussion will be recorded and posted on our !
class website and will be revisited at the end of the unit. !

Lesson 5: !
Nutrition (continued)- Students will begin the day using their ipad app to Intrapersonal, Logical
take notes on a video shown about health in our youth in this nation. !
Students will now individually devise a plan to monitor and measure their !
daily calories using the Tracker app on the iPad. It will be their !
responsibility to keep it updated throughout the unit. Foods will also be !
posted in this app. !

All fitness lessons will be performed by the students wearing a heart Kinesthetic,
rate monitor. Data will be collected and kept by the students in a Intrapersonal
personal journal. !

Lesson 6: !
Fitness (Circuit Training)- The students will go follow an instructor led !
workout. Sets will include strength training, agility, and core performance. Kinesthetic, Logic,

Fitness Trend (PowerPoint) !
The students will work in groups of 4-5. Each group will choose a trend Interpersonal, Visual,
they would like to focus on. They will research the trend and put their Verbal
findings into a PowerPoint/Keynote and present it to the rest of the class. !
Each member must speak, there needs to be images, and they must follow !
proper guidelines for the slides. !

Calorie and Diet Tracker (Tracker app) !
The students will need to submit their Tracker nutrition guide at the end of Intrapersonal, Logical
the unit. This should include daily calories and daily food and beverage !
intake. Should at least cover 5 days a week. The app is very user friendly !
and the students just need to punch in the information on a daily basis to !
stay up to speed. !

In a group of 4-5, students will put together a workout video in iMovie. The Interpersonal, Visual,

exercise every muscle. Each member must be in the video. In addition, the Kinesthetic
students will need to rewrite the lyrics to a song with lyrics pertaining to !
health or fitness. This song can either be performed in the video for extra !
credit, or just written out on a slide and put at the end of the video. !

Garage Band Podcast !
Each student must participate in the podcast sharing a few comments based Verbal, Logical
on their research findings and responding to their classmates results. !

Assessment (quantitative rubric):
The majority of this unit will be graded the same as most PE lessons and activities, based on effort and
participation. For some of the class work and technology assignments such as the videos,
presentations, and postings, there will be a rubric set aside for each.
