Technology

Implementation Strategy
EDIS 7010
Cathleen Topness

Objective: Help students and faculty identify and utilize technologies in their learning. To me
this means helping each teacher identify ways to integrate the right technology into their
classroom contexts and do so in a way that maximizes the benefits they get from the
technology and minimizes the additional work of learning a new technology.

To do this I would build upon UDL and TPACK using the following strategy:

Assess the opportunity

Extend the reach

Identify and tailor the technology

approach

Identify and support a pilot

Communicate the results &

expand

Assess the opportunity:
First I will look for opportunities where teachers need support. This could be new curriculum
areas, or areas that are underserved by inadequate, ineffective, or unadaptable (UDL)
curriculum. This helps identify where technology can serve the teacher, and the class, by filling
a void and improving instructional delivery, not technology for technologys sake. Im especially
looking for objectives and standards that teachers are required to teach, but for which the
teachers are not being well armed or that teachers are struggling to convey.

Extend the reach:
After identifying one or several potential curriculum areas in need of support, Ill look for ways
that the curriculum could (or should) be better serving the needs of all learners. Are the current
materials one size fits all? Does it provide options for varied representation or engagement?
Are there opportunities to enrich the material through thematic integration? How can we
make the topic more engaging for the teacher and student, best utilizing the teachers
pedagogical content knowledge, while also broadening the reach of the material across
different types of learners.

Identify and Tailor the Technology Approach
After identifying a curriculum area in need of support, I will work to identify a technology to
support it. This will be a balance of several factors:
Adaptability: does the technology sufficiently support the needs of various learners
Technology Suitability: Is the technology supported within the school environment in
terms of licensing, resourcing (enough computers, tablets, etc. for the needed use), cost
and content control/filtering.
Technology Knowledge: knowing that different teachers and different generations have
different technology comfort levels, the selected technology must be one that can be
adopted by the teacher (and students) with minimal effort. To this end, extending
existing technology (that teachers are already familiar with and are already licensed by
the school) is a preferable option, when other criteria is met.

Identify and Support a Pilot
After identifying the Content, Pedagogical and Technology elements, I can begin to combine
them to form a pilot to use the selected technology to address the teachers need. As part of
this, I will work to identify 1-2 teachers to help form, pilot and refine the technology use. My
role will be to coach how to best use the technology to fulfill the selected curricular goals and
students needs. The pilot may not be immediately successful, it may need to be refined and
improved based upon what we learn in classroom use.

Communicate Results & Expand:
Once the pilot has been performed successfully, I will work to communicate the success of the
pilot and be sure to highlight the effort of the pilot teachers. The goal is to help success spread
through the real results of the pilot, to answer questions teachers have and to build support for
broadening the use of the technology. In this way, less adventurous teachers can build on a
successful technology implementation, rather than face the uncertainty of an emerging
technology implementation.

I pledge that I have neither given nor received help on this examination (quiz, assignment, etc.)
