Verona Area Community Theater,
Denali Kraemer has gotten used to
waiting for rehearsal space.
But on a recent Monday, the
12-year-old had plenty of time
and space to recreate a scene from
Mulan in a red silk robe at the the-

VACT moved into its $2 million
building at 103 Lincoln St. on July 8
after three years of fundraising and
almost one full year of construction.
The building increases the theaters
space to 14,625 square feet, com-
pared to the 5,000-square-foot old
building, a converted barn on Bruce
Street where the theater produced
shows for 13 years.
Founded in 1992, VACT has grown
from its initial 30 members to 2,200
today.
The new building will only be used
for rehearsal and small performanc-
es because of the limited 150 seats.

Baldock said all musicals and any
plays expecting a large crowd will
still be performed at Verona Area
High School.
VACT board secretary Lynn Vilker
said it has almost tripled the number
of students VACT can work with at
one time, from 60 to 160. That allows
the group to open up its offerings
like summer classes to more than
open to 80 each.
When we used to rehearse, we
basically rehearsed in front of all the
props, Vilker explained, because
they only had one room to store and
build the sets.
VACT founder Dee Baldock said
now each camp has its own rehears-
al space, singing in music room,
dancing in dancing room, acting on
the stage, making sets and storing
costumes in set-building and costume
areas.
All of that, Vilker said, will allow
the group to ensure community
members see the value of their con-
tributions to the new building.

out to more people, Vilker said.

Two more VAHS grads win Merit Scholarships

Two more Verona Area
High School graduates
were announced this week
as National Merit Schol-
arship winners. They are
Jason Barr, who will attend
the Michigan Technologi-
cal University, and Alankrit
Shatadal, who will attend
Washington and Lee Uni-
versity.
That brings the total
for the Class of 2017 to
four, after brothers Jacob
and James Wellnitz were
announced earlier this year.
All four students won
their scholarships through
the college-sponsored pro-
gram within the National
Merit Scholarship umbrel-
la. The scholarships are

Joan wanted every child
to feel valued and needed,
said her daughters Molly
and Megan and her hus-
band, Jim.
She had a passion to
make everyone feel special,
no matter who they were,
Molly said. You know,
make everyone feel like
they were the most import-
ant person in the room.
A physical education
teacher, Joan died in 2012
after a four-month battle
with a rare form of cancer
in 2012. She was 50 years
old.
In 2014, her daughters
and husband started the
Joan Hanson Foundation, a
charity that donates all its
funds to local sports orga-
nizations toward financial
assistance and scholarships
for children.
Its major source of funds
is the Joan Hanson Founda-
tion Golf Classic. The third
annual outing will be held
1-9p.m. Friday, July 21,
at University Ridge Golf
Course, 9002 County Road
PD, Madison.
The event features golf,
silent auction, tailgate din-
ner and reception. The dress
code is a collared shirt and
no jeans. The cost is $150
per golfer or $575 per four-
some. A ticket for the din-
ner only is $50.
Among the local organi-
zations receiving founda-
tion funds are Verona Area
Soccer Clubs, The Boys
and Girls Clubs of Dane
County and Tri 4 Schools.
It was important to Joan
that she not only teach her
students the basics of dif-
ferent physical activities,
but to set them up to live
healthy lives.
She was all for (the
kids), Jim said. That was
her passion. And she loved
every day, and it showed
through the kids. A few
months before she died, she
was honored with the Crys-
tal Apple outstanding edu-
cator award.

Dane County Fair

4-Hers showcase animals, projects through July 23

To some, the Dane Coun-
ty Fair is one week of the
year to enjoy carnival rides,
deep-fried food and farm
animals. To others, its the
culmination of months of
preparation, dedication and
hard work.
Local 4-Hers, like sib-
lings Montana and Jake
Sarbacker of the Mudslid-
ers 4-H Club, will have the
opportunity to showcase
their hard work at the fair,
which is held July 19-23 at
the Alliant Energy Center.
T h e S a r b a c ke r s h ave
spent the last four months
working on their fair proj-
ects and with their Holstein
cattle, which they will com-
pete in dairy and showman-
ship classes with. Preparing
cattle for a fair involves
teaching them to lead, dai-
ly washing, clipping, fitting
and lots of practice.
This will be 9-year-old
Jake Sarbackers first time
showing at the Dane Coun-
ty Fair as a 4-H member.
The incoming fourth-grad-
er at Glacier Edge Elemen-
tary School also showed
Autumn, a March calf, at
the Stoughton Fair in prepa-
ration for the Dane County
Fair.

Verona splits Sunday League games last week

The Verona Home Talent team

League playoffs.
The Cavaliers (12-3) lost a tough
3-0 game at West Middleton Satur-
day before bouncing back Sunday
with a 9-0 win at Muscoda, but the
loss further hurt their chances at get-
ting home field throughout the play-
offs.
Verona is tied for first place with
Mount Horeb/Pine Bluff (11-2),
which defeated Oregon 4-0 Sunday,
but does not hold the tiebreaker. The
Cavaliers will need to defeat West
Middleton on July 30 and needs the
Bluffers to lose two of its final three
games, two of which are against
Muscoda (2-11).
However, Sundays win clinched
the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.

dents all the more valuable

students, offering thought-
ful answers to whatever was

Knoll was happy to see
his students so interested in
a topic he cares about him-
self.
You always want to try
and share your passion with
the students so that maybe
they become interested in
it, Knoll said. I think this
was a pretty successful trip
in those regards.

Q. What do I need to do to take care of my childs teeth?
A. Generally, a child gains their first baby tooth around 6 months of age and continues to get
new teeth until around 30 months. Once a tooth is visible in the mouth, daily hygiene by a parent
is necessary. All teeth are susceptible to decay and disease, even baby teeth. The two greatest risk
factors are a sugary or high carb diet and lack of daily brushing. Infants teeth can be cleaned daily
by using a wet wash-cloth or thimble brush to gently wipe off plaque. By age 2, a toddler-sized
soft bristle toothbrush should be used with a thin smear of fluoride toothpaste. By age 5, use just a
rice-sized amount of paste on the brush and always encourage your child to spit out all paste after

brushing. Remember that children cannot reliably brush teeth themselves until 6-8 years of age
and even then need to be closely supervised. Parents should plan on doing follow up brushing until age 7-8. Children are
notorious for believing that tasting toothpaste is just as good as brushing. The most commonly missed spot in the mouth for
brushing is along the gum line.
Every child should see the dentist by age 1 for an exam and decay risk assessment. This is a recent
recommendation due to increased decay in children under 5. Inquire if your dentist is comfortable

to be active. When your child is inside, help them find interesting activities that dont just

Q. Should I be concerned about Glaucoma?
A. Glaucoma is often called the sneak thief of sight. This disease is the second leading cause of
blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization. There are rarely warning signs.
Once symptoms begin to show, vision loss is permanent. There is no cure. However, blindness caused
by glaucoma can also be prevented, provided it is detected at an early stage.
Risk factors for glaucoma increase if you are over the age of 60; are Hispanic, African American
or Asian; have diabetes as a result of being obese; have family members (especially siblings) with
glaucoma; are very nearsighted.
Stephen Rudolph Because there are rarely symptoms that indicate the presence of glaucoma, most people do not realize
FACHE, CSA there is a problem until loss of vision occurs. By this time, it is often too late. Up to 40% of your vision
can disappear without your realizing you have glaucoma. This vision loss, while avoidable through early diagnosis, is irreversible.
The only way glaucoma can be detected is by regular comprehensive eye exams, which should begin sometime about 50.
It is important that you discuss with your senior loved ones how crucial it is to have regular eye exams. Find out if any of family
members have glaucoma and do research to determine if other risk factors are present. Remember, early detection is critical in
managing this disease and preventing complete vision loss.

Q. I get pain in my jaw when I eat and it sometimes makes a clicking noise.
Is there anything a chiropractor can do to help?

Q. My dog has allergies every year starting in the late summer. Can you suggest
anything new to help him stay comfortable?
A. Seasonal allergies are seen in dogs that have immune systems that react inappro-
priately to pollens and other proteins in their surroundings. Some breeds are more
commonly affected (Golden Retrievers, Westies, Labrador Retrievers, Shar Peis, and
more). Itching can occur around the eyes, ears, front feet, axillae, ventral abdomen
and rear end. The itch is caused by release of histamines and other chemical mediators
by immune cells in the skin.
Dr. Barney Smith One of the main medications used to treat canine allergies in past years has been
steroids (e.g., prednisone), but this class of medications has side effects if used for a
long time. Antihistamines are not very effective in dogs. Cyclosporine has also been used to reduce itch, but
can be expensive in larger dogs. Allergy injections based on blood or skin testing are effective in many dogs.
Newer treatments to reduce itch include both oral (Apoquel) and injectable (Cytopoint) medications. The
bottom line is that your veterinarian can help you choose the best approach to keep your pet comfortable.
