1. Introduction
Welcome to the field of Logistics and Physical Distribution - it includes the functions
of planning, organising, motivating and controlling the flow of purchased materials,
products and services, information and funds into and out of the organisation.
2. Purpose of the Module
The purpose of the module is to provide students with an understanding and
knowledge of Supply Chain Management in manufacturing and service industries
with specific reference to physical distribution and transportation as well as their
impact on customer service and other selected topics.
3. Module Content
The role of logistics in manufacturing and service operations, logistics strategies,
transport, warehousing, packaging, customer service, reverse logistics, logistics
performance and other selected topics.

Please Note:
There will be 1 LECTURER for this Module at PMB Campus.
The Lecturer will not be able to cover all material in each allocated chapter.
He will discuss key issues relevant to the topic area. Therefore, it is your
responsibility to uncover material not covered in class.
Friday lecture session is scheduled for Case Study exercises. It is important
that you DO NOT miss these sessions. Due to unpredictable circumstances
these sessions may be adjusted to meet the module outcomes.
Regular attendance at ALL Lectures is important and will ensure you grasp
concepts and reach a successful completion of this Course.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT:
You will be required to contribute to a group assignment (minimum of 3 and
maximum of 5 members per group), which has been designed to test your ability to
find, evaluate and communicate information.
As this Case in your group assignment is a very contemporary issue in South Africa,
please make sure as a group you conduct adequate research and look at all angles of
this topic. As new and current news and information is being surfaced every
fortnight around this contemporary issue.

The ASSIGNEMNT TOPIC (will also be placed on Moodle in the 1st week that
Lectures commence!)
Logistics and physical distribution are some of the core functions in supply chain
management globally. Research and write an insightful paper on the topic: Logistics
and physical distribution management in South Africa. Your paper should develop
starting by reviewing logistics and physical distribution trends in South Africa, and
then with this backdrop, argue practically, how these core functions are impacting
on the supply chain and all business processes in South Africa today.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES & RULES


FRIDAY, 29th of SEPTEMBER 2017 by 16h00 to the Administrators of the Module- A
box will be clearly marked for submission.
Guidelines for the Group Assignment:
By Friday 21st of July 2017 all students should have joined a group and have
their group registered with the lecturer for progress monitoring.
Group members should take responsibility of their learning by consult
regularly with the lecturer and the ADO for their assignment and progress.
All questions MUST be effectively answered.
Assignments submitted after the due date will be penalised- 5% will be
deducted for everyday the assignment is late. Should the assignment not be
submitted by the date the assignment marks as released then your group will
be given zero.
NO INDIVIDUAL SUBMISSIONS SHALL BE INTERTAINED.
Length: The assignment should approximately 1500-2000 words (6-8 pages).
Marks will be awarded for quality and not quantity.
The School of MIG uses the Harvard System of referencing.
Presentation of assignments is very important. All assignments will need to
be TYPED. No e-mailed assignments will be accepted. No HAND-WRITTEN
assignments will be accepted.
Please use 12 font, 1 line spacing and either Times New Roman or Arial
font.
