Fifty Years of Discourse Analysis

ZHU Yong-sheng
(Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, China)

Abstract: This paper divides the 50-year history of discourse analysis into three stages: the fetus stage,
the infant stage and the adult stage. It summarizes the achievements and characteristics of each of these
stages, points out the weak points and their underlying causes, and then makes some predictions about
the directions in which discourse analysis is likely to move forward and the areas in which breakthrough
is likely to be made.
