UNIT 209 UNDERSTAND HOW TO HANDLE INFORMATION IN SOCIAL CARE

SETTINGS

Outcome 1 Understand the need for secure handling of information in social care setting:

1.1 Identify the legislation that relates to the recording, storage and sharing of
information in social care:
- Data Protection Act 1998;
- Freedom of Information Act 2000;
- Health and Social Care Act 2008.

1.2 Explain why it is important to have secure systems for recording and storing
information in a social care setting:
- to respect the legislation;
- to protect confidentiality;
- to prevent files being stolen;
- to respect the rights of the person;
- the information must be accessible only for those who need to know.

Outcome 2 Know how to access support for handling information in social care settings:

2.1 Describe how to access guidance, information and advice about handling information:
- policies and procedure, colleagues, supervisor, manager, Information Commissioners
Office, internet.

2.2 Explain what actions to take when there are concerns over the recording, storing or
sharing of information:
- reporting to my supervisor, manager, colleagues;
- I will put my concerns in writing, with date, time and the exact nature of my concerns.
