I. Introduction (Teacher organized)

Facial Proportions Lesson

Masks are meant to be worn on the face, so to begin, we will take a look at how the face is put together.
Discuss the challenges of drawing an accurate depiction of a face.
Ie: Positioning of parts of face
Getting the eyes the same size
How to draw ears
Show pictures of the front view of the face, and have students observe and try to identify the positioning of key
features. Ie. Where are the eyes located, the bottom of the nose, the ears, etc?

Explain how artists are interested in how things are put together so that they can better understand what they are
seeing.
Artists like Leonardo Di Vinci (1452- 1519) dissected and examined cadavers (bodies) in order to understand what
influenced how the body looked on the outside, and also the size and positioning of one part in relation to another. Ie
the eye is located approximately half the length of the head and is approximately the same width as the nose.
Using the rules of proportions can give a more convincing look of realism in a general sense, and can help us compare
the general proportions to the subtle differences of each unique feature of a specific person or object. Ie I know that
the eyes are about one eye width apart, but are they that way on the person I`m looking at?
