Abstrac t: In the present artic le, w e m a inly try to deve lop a theo re tica l fram ew ork for m ultim oda l d iscourse ana lysis and re-
search w ith the theory of system ic func tiona l lingu istics, and prov ide guidance for the cho ice of e ffective procedures and prac-
tice in fo re ign language teach ing under the condition o fm odern med ia technology. In th is case, the cho ice o fm odes and m edia
in a mu ltim oda l d iscourse communication in a fore ign language teach ing setting can be m ade from the fo llow ing three perspec-
tives: 1) it shou ld be ab le to prov ide new teaching env ironm ents and facile conditions; 2) it shou ld be ab le to prov ide supp le-
m enta ry or enabling conditions; 3) it shou ld be able to prov ide mu lt-i channe ls for m ean ing-mak ing in a m ultim oda l discourse
communication, and enhance teach ing effic iency. A s for what type o f d iscourse can be best presented w ith what type o fm odes
o r m ed ia, it rem a ins a topic for further research.
