exam in ed are research prob lem s in the area of language acqu isition, the em pirical studies in
biolingu istics, the study o f Ch in ese and the lessons drawn from GB practice.

SHEN Yuan, Exp loring focu s in view of phonology, sem an tics and pragm atics: A
critical survey
Th is paper presents a rev iew o f th e recent explorations in the study of focus. Turning from the
sem antics o f focus to the interface problem s, the study of focus has w itnessed tw o m ajor
trends: ( 1) in creasing in terest in the study o f the phono log ica l rea lizat io n o f focus and the
re lationsh ip betw een phonology, the projection o f focus and g ivenness; ( 2) the em ergence o f
pragm atic theories o f focus. The true nature of focus assoc ia t io n is ca lled into question and has
prom pted m uch em pir ic al research. T he deve lo pm ent of new testing m ethods and the attem pt to
de lineate the ro les p layed by vario us contributing factors w ill shed new ligh t on in terface
stud ies in genera,l and on future stud ie s o f focus in particu lar.

The present art icle surveys the C ard iff G ramm ar. F irs,t it briefly show s the orig in and
deve lo pm ent o f the C ard iff G ramm ar. T hen it in troduces the m a jo r aspects of the Cardiff
Gramm ar, in cluding its basic ideo log ical stance, basic m odel and the basic gramm atical
patterns. Th irdly, it presents five characteristics o f C ard iff Gramm ar: ( 1) the b id irectio na lity
of form and m eaning, ( 2) the un ificatio n of cogn ition and in teraction, ( 3) the un ified
syntactic structu re, ( 4) the rea lizat io n o f the d ifferent types of m ean ings by d ifferent e lem ents
of the syntactic structure, and ( 5) the sem antic system be ing w ith in the boundar ie s o f the
linguistic system. F in ally, it comm en ts briefly on the statu s and ro le of the Cardiff G ramm ar in
v iew of its re latio nship w ith H allidayps system ic functional g ramm ar.
