Abstract: T his paper at tempts to answ er so me theor etical questions o f cor pus-based languag e studies. T hree theor eti-
cal considerat ions ar e addr essed to captur e the nat ur e o f cor pus ling uist ics . 1) Is Cor pus L ing uistics an independent
br anch under the umbr ella o f linguistics ? 2) W hat can cor pus data offer to linguists ? and 3) W hat kind o f r esea rch
that Co rpus L ing uistics should be ? A nswer s t o the thr ee theo retical questio ns w ill co nduce to a fuller under standing o f
the nat ur e of co rpus-based language studies and their development.
