deve lo pm en.t N ow adays there are m any branches of lin gu istics, such as syn tax, sem antics,
pragm atics, phono logy, phonet ics, psycholingu istics, socio linguist ics, cognitive lingu istics,
com putational lingu istics, corpus lingu istics, neuro lin gu istics, to nam e but a few. W here do
th ese branches com e from? A re there any patterns of developm en t to be found? A re they in ter-
re lated? T his paper v iew s th e developm ent of contem porary lingu is tics like throw in g three stones
in to a pond bring ing about three concentric rings o f expansio n. T he first concen tric rin g focuses
on the relation betw een language, sem io tic and society. A lth ough Saussure de fin es la la ngue as

YUAN Yu lin, On the cond itions for setting up zero elem en t in lingu istic analysis
Th is paper first m akes a brie f rev iew o f the histo ry of the no tion zero, w hich in clu des its
orig in in the Sanskrit Gramm ar, th e acceptance o f it in the m odern lingu istics va lu e system,
th e first attem pt to use it in the Am erican descrip t iv e lin gu istics, as w e ll as th e overuse o f it
in the pos-
t structural gramm ar. A lso exam in ed are the crit icism s abou t its abuse. B ene fiting
from H aas ( 1962) in particu lar, this paper analyses the functio n of the various zero e lem ents
proposed by lin gu ists, and dem onstrates that as an ontological comm itm ent o r a m ethodolog ical
po lic y, w e can establish the concept o f zero elem ent under the prin c ip le o f one to one
correspondence.
