Introduction
In the last issue, we looked at the Asana vidhinirUpaNam from sUta saMhitA. In this
issue we bring the prANAyAma vidhinirUpaNam from aShtANgayOga. This chapter in
fact deals only with the basic prANAyAmA and stays away from the difficult ones such
as bhastrikA, kapAlabhAti and the bhandAs. In fact, the breathing ratios have been
relaxed (if the sAdhakAs are unable to handle the holding of the breath). The various
benefits of performing prANAyAmAm on a regular basis is clearly provided and the very
fact that jnana and mukti as the end goal for this is stated in very clear terms..
We have witnessed the power of Lord VaruNA in the last few weeks and we felt that
prayers to VaruNA to not just show His powers but also to curtail his powers are needed
sometimes. We have included varuNA mantra japA and AvaraNA in this issue as it first
to the current situation on ground in South India.
During the month of KarthikA, very few people know about a gupta navarAtri and that is
devoted to vanadurgA. Hence the vanadurgA dhyAna shloka word-by-word meaning is
included..

Due to the destroyed sins, the consciousness shines like a mirror. Then the

Those who reached the stage of detachment from samsArA, the only instrument to
reach mOkShA is jnana as stated by the shrutIs.
Oh! It is just unfortunate that lowly mankind ignores this jnana nectar and wanders
around the lowly happiness offered by samsArA due to the power of mAyA.
Those who have enjoyed the jnAnAmRutA once, would shed all other things and runs
behind this experience all the time.

Intelligent people consider this universe as a jnana svarUpA. However ignorant people
look at this materialistically.
The yajnAs offer the state of dEvAs. The penance offers the state of brahmA. Charity
bestows happiness. Only through jNAnA does a person attain brahmam (mOkShA)
Some think that they can attain mOkShA through karmAs alone. Those ignorant folks
are not aware that the shrutI loudly proclaims that this is as good as a stick.

Since men are surrounded by ajnAnA, they are called amuktA (enslaved). Similar to
how darkness is removed by the presence of light, ajnAnA is automatically destroyed by
gaining the jnana.

Since attachment etc is destroyed, the good deeds and sins are destroyed. Since there
is no puNyA or pApA and no attachment to the body, there need to take another body is

Thus, sukhA and dukkha are experienced only due to ajnAnA and the cure for that is
jnAnA alone and not karma.

There is no other better tool other than jnAnA available to get rid of sukhA and dukkha
(puNyA and pApA). To cut down saMsArA jnAnA is the only way.
I have explained everything in brief because of my affection towards you. Maintain the
secrecy of the great knowledge of vEdAntA.

pullArA, attAhAs
pullArA (chanDikA) is the name of the goddess at the attahAs shakti pIth located at
attahAs, West Bengal. Satis lower lips fell at this place. This place is about 180 kms
from Kolkatta and takes about 4 hrs to reach. The temple is located near a very scenic
pond among paddy fields and a small forest area hosting egret rookery. The local name
for the dEvi is pullArA but the true form is ChandikA. The bhairava is vishvEshvara. This
temple is in a very remote corner with no proper places to stay near by or places to eat
near by. Hence the temple trustees have constructed guest houses to stay and they
also offer food for the devotees who visit from far away places. This temple has a
beautiful garden around and has some very interesting spots that will attract a vIrA /
kaulA to perform their sAdhanAs here.

1. What are the differences between Shankara AdvaitA and Kashmir Shaivism?
Essentially both are advaita philosophy, there is no difference of opinion on the unity in
the seen diversity, and only the study into the aspects varies. The Pure Consciousness
(Prakaasa) is said as the ultimate in Shankara philosophy, while the Ultimate Brahman
is both prakaasha and vimarsha (the experience or contemplative reflection) in
Kashmeera shaviva. Both rely on the Grace of the Ultimate for an aspirant. Maya is
akatita ghatanaa not able to tell , unknown in Shankara while it is an aspect the
supreme will of the Ultimate to hide himself for the joyful play (leelaa). Learned
scholars may debate on the aspects, but for us sadhakas, it is suffice to know that all
tantra has mainly kashmira shaiva basis.
2. Why incense smoke (doopa) is shown before Navel (Nabhi) of a deity in the
service (upacara)?
In the foetus state, a child breathes through the navel; all the naadis subtle channels of
the prana- have a connection to the navel cakra too. Thus the service of dhoopa
(smoke) indicative of the air element is shown at the navel appropriately.
There is no source or textual reference for Rule One. It is in sampradaya only, by virtue
of tradition. The Guru may out of necessity due to old age, infirmity and other reasons
like staying in far off places, can order the shishya to do initiation, thus elevating himself
to the parama guru level. The shishya though empowered at the poorna diksha time,
will be reluctant to initiate anyone. Thus, in order to please the guru and follow his
orders explicitly he can initiate another person. Then the Rule two will be applicable.
