Special thanks must go to.Mrs. Kazuo Ono, Mr. Yoshito
Ono and. the entire Ono family for their warm welcome

Finally, we would like to. express our deepest gratitude

and immense admiration for Kazuo Ono, to whom this
book is dedicated.

NOTE
For the transcription of Japanese words into English we have
used the Hepburn system of romanization, the system in widest
use today. Japanese vowels are pronounced a as in father, e as
in red, i as in marine, o as in solo, and u as in rule. Long
vowels are topped with a macron, as in buyo.
l
We have made one major exception in romanization, the word
butoh, in order to be consistent with the roman spelling
commonly used by butoh performers themselves. Certain
performance titles have not been translated into English at the
l
request of the artist concerned. We hope that readers will not
find this inconsistency too disturbing.
