QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Spill response and Control Plan
The main objective of this waste management plan is to ensure that the project is
carried out in a manner that reduces and minimizes the impact to the environment
which might be caused by the generation of all types of waste related to the activities of
the project construction.
Also this plan is aiming to comply with the UAE federal and local environmental
legislations concerned the environment protection (Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 for
Environment Protection and Development, Chapter 5 Handling of Hazardous
Substances and Waste and Medical Waste).
To abide with the Executive Order of the Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 for Environment
Protection and Development, when it relates to the waste management.
Adhere to the Law No. 21 of 2005 for Waste Management in Abu Dhabi Emirate.
The purpose of this plan is to manage the various types of waste generated during the
project at different stages. It is also targeting to implement all possible measures &
practices to minimize and mitigate unexpected environmental incidents or contingencies
which might be occurred during the construction. Those measures and practices such as
segregation, reuse, and proper disposal of the waste according to the Environment
Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) requirements.
The scope of this plan covers all the various construction activities of the Urban Island
Crossing (Bridge 3) Project, in addition to the office activities

4 WASTE CATEGORIES
Each stage of construction activities generate considerable amount of waste. Various stages of
construction activities with a potential to generate waste are
Excavation
Concreting
Waterproofing
Structural Work
Electrical Installations
Painting and Finishing work
The main categories of the waste which are expected to be generated from the construction
various phases of the N 7133 project are:

quantity during water proofing works. Finishing work will also generate small amount of paint,
varnish and thinner waste or its empty bottles.
Equipment maintenance will be carried out in the maintenance area provided. Only carpentry
workshop will be set inside the site which will create wood waste. Vehicle water washing will be
carried out in the area. Concrete will be received and no concrete washing area will be provided
in the site. Chute of the mixer will be covered while moving across the site. Two generators shall
be in operation in L & T site office, one being standby. Used oil and filters will be generated from
these generators.
5 WASTE MANAGEMENT
The table below gives an approximate quantity of waste that will be generated from the whole
project
Expected type of waste
S.No Waste
1. Plastics and Paper
2. Food Waste
3. Metal Scrap
4. Wood Waste
5. Hazardous Waste
6. Used Oil From Generators/Equipments
7. Empty chemical bottle for water proofing( 20 Liter pail)
8. Medical Waste
It is that type of waste which is generated from offices, and the workers facilities / rest area.
Paper and plastics will be collected in a bin clearly labeled by using the label given in the
attachment 2. Once the bin in full it will be transferred to the waste skips for paper and plastics.
When the skip is full paper and plastic waste will be transported by approved sub contractor.
One separate skip will be provided for food waste in each location which will be covered,
Sewage and wastewater from welfare facilities will be collected into the sewage tank. Sewage
tank will be buried underground in concreted floor. The level of sewage tank will be daily visually
inspected and a level alarm system will also be installed in the sewage tank. When the level is
about 80% the alarm system will give both visual and audible indication. Once the tank is about
fill (about 80%) agency will be informed to collect the sewage. Used cartridge and batteries will
be collected in separate bin and handed over to agency once the bin is full. All the hazardous
waste generated in this project will be temporarily stored in hazardous waste storage area

provided. Hazardous waste storage area will be concreted. Biomedical waste will be collected in
a biohazard container. Only the trained first aider will handle the biohazard waste. Attachment 3
gives examples of types of bins and waste skip to be used. L & T is in the process of contracting
a service of approved medical waste handling facility.
Excavated soil will be used for the back filling. Wood waste will be collected in a designated
area having 2 m & 2 m area and the space will be clearly barricaded and labeled in each
substation. Reusable wood waste will be segregated and used for site purposes. A skip will be
provided in all substation locations for the collection of scrap metal. Cured Concrete waste will
be collected in a separate designated area. The area will be properly labeled using the label
given in the attachment 3.
Chemical waste or empty epoxy cans produced during the water proofing work will not be
stored on site. It will be taken away from the site by the water proofing subcontractor. But a
temporary storage area will be provided in each substation. Such storage area will have a
concreted floor with a bund wall.
All the generators will be in an annual maintenance contract with a third party. So no used oil or
filters will be stored on site it will be taken away by the maintenance company on the same day
of oil change. Apart from this the project activities are unlikely to produce any hazardous waste.
Empty can of thinner and paints generated in the finishing stage will be collected in a separate
bin with tight lid. In case of any hazardous waste such as contaminated soil after a spill
incident, will be collected in bin with tight lid and will be handed over to Agency. Such type of
hazardous waste will be stored in the hazardous waste storage area provided in substation/lay
down area.

EHS steward will make daily inspections of waste containers and receptacles to monitor and
ensure that waste is properly segregated and the trip tickets being used for transportation and
disposal of wastes . The trip ticket will be signed by the administration assistant. Copy of the trip
ticket will be kept in L & T EHS Office.
Monthly Waste Generation Report (attachment 1) will be prepared by L & T EHS Manager and
shall be forwarded to Client/Engineer.
