Ballast Water I

What is ballast water ?

Ballast is any material used to weight and/or balance an object. One example is the sandbags carried on
conventional hot-air balloons, which can be discarded to lighten the balloons load, allowing it to ascend.
Ballast water is therefore water carried by ships to ensure stability, trim and structural integrity.
Ballast Water II

Shipping moves over 80% of the worlds commodities and transfers approximately 3 to 5
billion tonnes of ballast water internationally each year.
A similar volume may also be transferred domestically within countries and regions each
year.
Ballast water is absolutely essential to the safe and efficient operation of modern
shipping, providing balance and stability to un-laden ships.
However, it may also pose a serious ecological, economic and health threat.

New Standards for Ballast Water

Regulation D-2 Ballast Water Performance Standard - Ships conducting ballast water
management shall discharge:
Less than 10 viable organisms which are greater than or equal to 50 m (micrometers) in
minimum dimension per cubic meter.
Less than 10 viable organisms which are less than 10-50 m in minimum dimension per
milliliter.

Yamit Ballast Water Filtration Solution

2 Lines of Products
FIT ALL

Yamit SBW and MBW Series filters remove more than 98% of micro-organisms greater
than or equal to 50 m (micrometers) in size with our 40 m screen
Operation Principle

Filtration Mode: Water flows from the inlet (1) to the outlet (8) through the filter
element (2).
The Cleaning Process starts as soon as the head loss (P) across the filter reaches the
preset value [recommended 0.5 bar (7psi)]
Flushing Mode: The flushing valve (7) opens and the pressure in the flushing
chamber (6) and in the dirt collector (3) is lowered, creating a suction process via the
suction nozzles (4). The flushing water carrying the dirt flows to the dirt collector (3)
and, from there, through the flushing valve (7) out of the filter.
The electric motor (5) simultaneously rotates the dirt collector and moves it along its
axes.
The entire flushing process takes 15 seconds for SBW Filters and 15-40 seconds for
MBW Filters.
The water supply is uninterrupted during the entire process.

Technical Characteristics

Filter Housing: Carbon steel.

Filter Screens: Stainless steel.
Internal /External Coating: special coating resistant to sea water and to
corrosive environments.
Maximum Working Pressure: 10 bar (145 psi).
Minimum Working Pressure (for efficient flushing): 1.8 bar (26 psi)
Maximum Water Temperature: 65C (149F).
Clean Screen Head Loss: up to 0.1 bar (1.45 psi).
Filtration Grade: 40 m (micrometers)
Filters are supplied with flanged connections, as per customer requirements
Controller:
The flushing cycle is activated by the pressure differential when head loss
reaches the present value (typically 0.5 bar [7 psi])
A time - basis backup (preset by the operator) guarantees that the
flushing cycle occurs even if the head loss across the screen has not
reached the preset value
