My name is Kaitlyn Valis and I am a faculty member at Connelly School of the Holy
Child in Potomac, MD. My school is initiating a 1 to 1 Microsoft Surface Program in the fall of
the 2016-2017 school year. We piloted the program in the 6th grade and will roll it out to the
incoming 9th grade and expand it to the 7th grade as well. As a current member of the
technology committee I have already played a role in the planning of this program and Im
excited about what is to come for our school and our students. This implementation requires
a lot of planning for faculty professional development, student training, and establishing
school wide policies.
As a part of the implementation the technology committee has decided to use the
ISTE Standards for Teachers and Students as benchmarks for teacher and student
proficiency in technology use and implementation. I will be working to help establish where
individual faculty members currently are with respect to meeting ISTE Standards for
Teachers and work with them to set realistic goals to expand their teaching practices to
meet more standards. Over the summer each faculty member completed an extensive
technology survey and there is a lot of data that was compiled from those survey results. I
would also like to take a more in depth look at those results to help guide individual plans
and goal setting for each faculty member. By using these standards, we are accepting that
proficiency in effective technology integration is not always linear and that growth can
happen in various categories as it relates to meaningful and effective technology integration.
Not only do I plan to help faculty members establish goals, but I will work with the
technology department to support and guide them throughout the year. Also, I will work with
the technology committee to establish an infrastructure of support for faculty throughout the
year as well.
The 1 to 1 technology implementation is and will be an ongoing process. The
administration and technology committee have already begun to plan for faculty preparation
and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the winter and spring. I plan to work during
the beginning of the summer to prepare for the summer technology camp and further support
in the fall. I anticipate that this internship will continue into the fall of next year as we
transition our students and teachers.
I'm excited to work collaboratively with member of the technology department and
committee, my administration, and fellow faculty members to best meet the needs of our
school and make this transition to 1 to 1 smooth and effective for teaching and learning.
