The theory of co-selection has far-reaching significances for descriptive linguistics and linguistic studies in gen-
eral It also provides an important theoretical perspective and a methodological framework for phraseological stud-
ies This paper is intended to address major types of co-selection arising out of the communicative processnamely
co-selection of lexis and grammarco-selection of lexis and lexisand co-selection of patterns and meaningswhich
inevitably bring about various types of de facto multi-word unitscutting across the semantics-syntax and semantics-
pragmatics interfaces It also elaborates the notion of extended unit of meaningits components and its methods of
analysiswith a focus on semantic preference and semantic prosody as well as their abstractions By way of illustra-
tionthe extended unit of meaning of the Chinese word zhanxian is explored to demonstrate the characteristics of
corpus-driven phraseologyas distinguished from the classical phraseology

The idiomatic UCPP constructions are stored in the mental lexicon of native Chinese Although they are limited
in numberthe frequency of their use is high This type of UCPP accumulates its diachronical motivations in practi-
cal usethereby abstracting into formulaic chunksand native speakers of Chinese can readily retrieve them from
their mental lexicon and put into actual use In contrastthe formation of canonical UCPP is based on the standard
derivations and syntactic computationsand can be analyzed along the lines of thematic roles and case This article
proposes that language research should not be partial in selecting theoriesotherwise subtle differences covered
within the linguistic facts will be overlooked

Shortening is one of the effective means to produce new words By analyzing the mapping between shortened
words and existent words from the perspective of CCxGthis study examines the motivation of and cognitive con-
straints on the formation of the former It shows that shortened words are not produced arbitrarily and unconditional-
lybut constrained generally by the Principle of Maximized Economy and the Principle of Maximized Expressive
Powerunder which optimal choices are made in phonologicalsyntacticsemantic and pragmatic terms Statistic
