WELDED CONNECTION ACCORDING TO IS: 800-2007

Clause Description Figure

10.5.1.1 End returns >= 2*S

10.5.1.2 In a lap joint,

Lap >=4*t or 40 mm

10.5.1.3 Single fillet weld should not be used when

the weld is subjected to moment about
longitudinal axis of the weld.
10.5.2 Size of welds (S)
Fillet weld
For deep penetration weld:-
For dp <= 2.4 mm
S = leg size + 2.4 mm

For dp > 2.4 mm

S = leg size + dp

S >= 3mm
(Refer table 21 of IS:800)

10.5.8.1 Fillet weld applied to the square edge

S = t 1.5mm

10.5.8.2 Fillet weld applied to rounded edges

S = t 0.25*t

10.5.3 Throat thickness (tt)

Fillet weld
For faces inclined at or upto 90 degree
tt > 3mm
tt <= 0.7*S or 1.0t(under special
circumstances)
For faces inclined at angle more than 90
degree
tt = K*S where K is a constant from table 22.

For equal leg sizes fillet weld tt =

For unequal leg sizes tt =

Butt or Groove welds

For complete penetration weld,
tt = t
where, t = thickness of thinner plate

For incomplete penetration weld,

tt = (7/8)*t but (5/8)*t is used in calculations

For partial penetration welds,

The unwelded portion < 0.25*t
tt = (5/8)*t

10.5.4 Effective length of welds

Fillet weld
For parallel welds along the longitudinal
axis,
Length of weld (L) >= transverse distance
between longitudinal welds (w).
W <= 16*t

L >= 4*s (If this requirement is not met

then take s = L/4.)

Butt weld
L >= 4*s

Slot or plug welds

Width or diameter of weld < 3*t or 25 mm,
whichever is greater.

Corners at the enclosed ends should be

rounded with radius > 1.5*t or 12 mm,
whichever is greater.
Distance between edge of the part and edge
of slot or distance between adjacent slots >
2*t and 25 mm.

10.5.4.4 Long joints

When L > 150*tt, the weld strength shall be
reduced as per cl. 10.5.7.3.
10.5.5 Intermittent welds
Fillet welds
w >=4*S or 40 mm
g <= 12*t (Compression members)
g <= 16*t (Tension members)
g < 200 mm Intermittent welds shall not be
used in positions subjected to
Butt welds dynamic or repetitive stresses.
w >= 4*S
g <= 16*t
10.5.7.1 Design Strength of weld
Shop weld
Fillet welds, Slot or Plug welds
Fwd = Fu/gmw
Fu = Smaller of ultimate stress of weld or parent metal.
Butt Welds
Same as above but,
Fu = ultimate stress of weld metal

Site Welds
10.5.7.2 Same as above but gmw = 1.5.
10.5.9 Stresses due to Individual forces
(Either Compressive or tensile or shear stress)
10.5.10 Stresses due to Combination of forces
(Subjected to normal and shear stress)

10.5.10.1 Fillet welds

(Refer cl. 10.5.10.1.2 for conditions of when the checks need not be checked in
fillet welds)
10.5.10.2 Butt welds
(Refer cl 10.5.10.2.1 for conditions of when the checks need not be checked in
butt welds)

10.5.10.2.2 Combined Bearing, bending and shear in butt joints
