ThemostversatilerangeofDriverAssistanceSystemseverforaBMWmodelwaslaunchedwiththe
introductionoftheG12.

Numerousinnovativesystemshavebeenintroducedandhaveopenedthewayforhighlyautomated
driving.ItisplannedthatthetechnicalprerequisiteswillhavebeenlaidforanAutobahnpilotby2020
sothatwewillbeabletoofferhighlyautomateddrivingforthefirsttime.

Atpresent,however,theappropriatelegalfoundationshavenotbeenlaidforautonomousdriving.

Driversarestillexpectedtodrivewithbothhandsonthesteeringwheel,althoughsystemsarealready
inplacetodrivethevehicleautonomouslyincertainsituations.

ThealreadycomprehensiverangeofDriverAssistanceSystemshasbeenexpandedagainintheG30
toincluderevolutionarynewsystems.SystemssuchasIntersectionWarningareinuse.EvasionAid
ispresentedforthefirsttimewiththelaunchoftheG30.Forevengreaterconvenience,therestart
timeontheActiveCruiseControlStop&Gofunctionhasbeenincreased,andthedetectionofmore
informationandtheincorporationoffurthersensorshasmademoredriver-likedrivingcharacteristics
possible.

AfurtherfeatureamongthecamerasystemsistheRemote3DViewfunctionwhichmakesitpossible
totransmitanimageoftheparkedvehicletomobiledevices.

TheinterplaybetweenthevariedandintelligentDriverAssistanceSystemssupportsthedriverin
everyrespect;frommakingdrivingmorecomfortabletoprovidingthereassuringfeelingofsafetyonall

environments.SystemssuchastheDaytimePedestrianProtectionprovidesupportinurbantraffic,for
instance.NightVisioncanassistthedriverwhendrivingonsingle-laneroadswithadjacentwoodland
(deercrossings,etc.).TheLaneDepartureWarningandBlindSpotDetectionaswellastheSide
CollisionAvoidanceprovideevenmoresafetyintraffic.Accidentscanbeavoidedthroughautomatic
brakeinterventions,activesteeringinterventionsoracombinationofboth.

Oncemore,newDriverAssistanceSystemsarebeingpresentedwiththelaunchofanewBMW5
Series.TheIntelligentSafetymenuhasbeenadaptedtothenewsystemsaccordingly.

Roadsignsfortopspeedlimitationsthatdonotcomplywiththelegalstandard,particularlythose
withoutcircularframes,arenotalwaysdetected.Thesamealsoappliesforroadsignswhicharefully
orpartiallycoveredbylabels,dirtorvegetation.Longdistancestotheroadsign,highdrivingspeeds
andpoorweatherconditions,particularlyatnight,makeitmoredifficultforthesystemtorecognize
roadsignsreliably.Toensurethecurrenttopspeedlimitationsaredisplayedasaccuratelyaspossible,
thedataofthenavigationroadmapshouldbeup-to-date.

ThefunctionalityoftheRoadSignRecognitionmaybeimpairedinthefollowingsituationsandthis

The rear view camera supports the driver when parking and maneuvering. The area behind the vehicle
is recorded by the rear view camera and shown on the Central Information Display.

16.1.6. Moving camera angle


When the moving camera angle is selected, a circular trajectory is shown around the vehicle on the
Central Information Display. Predetermined angles can be selected on the circular trajectory by turning
the controller or using the touch function.

In vehicles with the Gesture Control, optional equipment (OE 6U8), the moving camera angle can also
be controlled in this way.

The current angle is identified by a camera symbol. Depending on the view, the surroundings of the
vehicle or a partial area of the surroundings are shown on the Central Information Display.

Inmostcases,thevehicleinfrontofthevehicleinfrontis,however,concealedbythevehicleinfront,
whichiswhythecameracangenerallynotdetectit.Thefrontradar,however,consistentlyprovides
gooddetectionqualityherebylookingunderthevehicleinfront.

frontofthevehicleandthedriverhastoavoidthisobstaclequicklyandwithoutsignificantbraking.

EvasionAidsupportsthedriverinavoidancemaneuversinemergencysituationsandcalculatesan
optimumescapetrackpasttheobstacle.

Theescapetrackiscalculatedwithinthephysicallimitsoftheparticularvehicle.Thecalculated
escapetrackisdesignedtominimizetransversedynamics.

maximumsupportofthedriver.Thiscanreducetheriskofunstablevehiclebehaviororoverloadingthe
driverinanacuteavoidancemaneuver.

EvasionAidchecksthecurrentvehicleinclinationandthedriver'ssteeringwheelactionsand
comparestheinformationwiththecomputedescapetrack.Shouldthesystemdetectdiscrepancies,
anappropriatesteeringinterventionisappliedtosteerthevehicletothepreviouslyestimatedescape
track.

Thedesignobjectiveforthesystemwasthatthedriver'sselectedsteeringisnotbypassed,but
insteadthefeelofthesteeringwheeluseismodified.Thedriverissupportedbyanadditionalsupport
torqueintheElectronicPowerSteering(EPS)fortheavoidancemaneuver.

Ifacollision-threateningsituationisdetectedandanacutewarninghasbeenissued,EvasionAid
evaluatesthetrafficsituation.

determiningtheavoidingdirection.Anybrakeinterventioninitiatedbytheacutewarningisabortedor
suppressedasappropriate.TheElectronicPowerSteering(EPS)implementsasupportingsteering
intervention.

Thevehicleismademoreagilebythesystemasitsteersaroundtheobstacleandthenstabilized
againwhenitreachestheescapelane.

Rapidandeffectiveavoidanceispossiblethankstothevehicle'simprovedresponsetosteering
commands,withoutendangeringthegeneraldrivingstability.

26.5.Limitsofthesystem
Thecollisionwarninghasalimitedcapacityfordetection.Asaresult,incorrectordelayedwarnings
mayoccurandconsequentlyEvasionAidislimitedinitsoperation.Itisalsopossiblethatthefollowing
vehiclesarenotdetected:

Aslowvehiclewhendrivingoffathighspeed.
Vehiclesthatsuddenlyswerveordeceleraterapidly.
