Anchor Chart
Directions

1. Prior to class, color and cut out the

cinnamon rolls and the ants, as shown.

2. Create this anchor chart.

3. At the beginning of class, point out the

anchor chart, focusing on the following:
Cinnamon rolls look the same, and
cinnamon sounds like synonym, so we are
using this cinnamon roll image to help us
remember what synonyms are.
On this side of the anchor chart, we will
always use the same color (blue) to help
us recall that synonyms refer to words
that have the same meaning.
I created a red ant and a black ant
(different colors) to help us remember
that antonyms are words that are very
different.
The ants are moving in opposite directions
because antonyms are words that have
opposite meanings.
On this side of the anchor chart, we will
always use different colors (red and
green) to help us recall that antonyms
refer to words that have different
meanings.

4. Have students take turns generating

synonyms and antonyms for the words
listed. As they name appropriate words,
write them on the chart.

5. Hang this anchor chart in your classroom

for future reference!

Interactive Notebook Directions
1. Color the synonym roll and ant. Cut out both foldables along
the solid outside line. Fold in the flaps, as shown.

2. Glue each into the

middle of a notebook
page. (Be careful not
to get any glue on the
flaps.)

3. At the top of the synonym page, write Synonyms. Beneath

that, write same. (I used a blue marker so that it would
match the anchor chart.)

4. At the top of the antonym page, write Antonyms. Beneath

that, write opposites. (I alternated using a red marker and a
green marker so that it would match the anchor chart.)

5. On the outside flaps of the synonym foldable, write a synonym

for the words written
on each flap.

6. On the outside flaps

of the antonym
foldable, write an
antonym for the
words written on
each flap.
