Abstract: The paper report s a st udy on vocabulary variat ion across speech and w riting by Y ear O ne and Y ear Four English majors in an at t empt to
see whether such changes bring English learn ers closer t o t he nat ive vocabulary use across speech and w riting. T he st udy examined t w o t ypes of corpus:

t he learner corpus and t he nat ive corpus. The learner corpus includes four t ypes ( Y ear O ne speech and w rit ing; Y ear 4 speech and w rit ing) wh ich each

consist of 30 random samples and t he nat ive corpus cont ains t wo t ypes ( speech and w rit ing) w hich each have 15 samples. The results show t hat t hrough

f our years. study, t he diff erences in vocabulary use across speech an d writ ing by Year 4 English majors have been increased. How ever, such dif ferences
w ere st ill f ar more smaller t han the correspon ding diff erences in nat ive vocabulary use. The result s conf irm t he hypot hesis t hat t he learner. s register is

a mixed one which does not always display ident ifiable regist er features.
