Lesson Idea Name: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Content Area: Mathematics (Geometry)
Grade Level(s): 5-6

Content Standard Addressed:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.F.A.1
Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a
function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.1
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.F.A.2
Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically,
graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). For example, given a linear function
represented by a table of values and a linear function represented by an algebraic expression,
determine which function has the greater rate of change.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1b: build networks and customize their learning environments in ways that support the learning process.
1c: use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their
learning in a variety of ways.
1d: understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use
and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging
technologies.
3c: curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of
artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
6a: choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or
communication.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher would have a list of equations to pass around the class, and each student must sign
up for their equation. Then, the teacher will do a tutorial in Google Docs, and show the class
how to access the sheets and using math modeling tools. To complete their assignment, the
student must write down the equation, represent the equation in 3 ways, and explain what is
happening and why they chose those representations. They must also identify the zeros and the
slope of the graph. For feedback, during this process of the students working on their Docs, the
teacher will go into the documents on Google Drive and leave comments on anything that

needs to be changed or added. This way, the students can see these remarks right away because
the document is live.
