THE HAMMERHEAD
SHARK

There are many different types of hammerhead sharks, but


all of them feature the elongated and flattened head. It is
believed that the distinctive shape of the head improves
vision, and increases the sharks ability to detect prey.

THE BASKING
SHARK

The basking shark is the second largest living fish: they can
reach over 30 feet long! Basking sharks are generally not
aggressive, and they feed by spreading their mouths wide
open to scoop up tiny zooplankton and invertebrates.

THE GREAT WHITE
SHARK

The great white shark is perhaps the most well-known of all


the sharks. They can grow to be over 20 feet long and weigh
as much as 5,000 pounds! In spite of their bad reputation,
great whites generally will not intentionally hunt people.

THE LEMON
SHARK

Lemon sharks are so named because at certain depths, the


light interaction with the seawater makes their skin appear
pitted and yellowish, like the skin of a lemon. Lemon sharks
prefer moderately deep tropical waters.

THE MAKO
SHARK

There are two types of mako shark: the shortfin, and the rare
longfin. Both types of mako sharks are fast swimmers; some
have been recorded swimming in bursts of over 45 miles per
hour. They can leap 30 feet out of the water!

THE THRESHER
SHARK

Thresher sharks are a group of sharks characterized by their


long caudal fins, or tail fins, that can be as long as the body of
the shark itself. The long tail is used as a weapon to stun prey.
They prefer open water rather than shorelines.

THE TIGER
SHARK

Named for the pattern on the sides of young sharks, tiger


sharks are solitary hunters that can reach lengths of 20 feet.
Tiger sharks have a reputation for being voracious eaters
that will try to consume anything that will fit in their mouths.

THE WHALE
SHARK

Whale sharks are the largest living fish in the world. The largest
recorded whale shark was over 41 feet long and weighed
47,000 pounds! In spite of their large size, whale sharks pose
no threat to humans, because they are filter feeders.

THE NURSE
SHARK

Nurse sharks are nocturnal predators that hunt by rooting


around on the ocean floor in search of crustaceans, fish, sting-
rays and other bottom dwellers. They also will graze on coral
and algae. Nurse sharks can grow to be over 10 feet long.
