Abstract: T he objective of this r esearch is: 1) to disco ver bo th the gr ammatical and co llocational misuse o f the ver b-
no un collo catio n patter ns in the CO L EC thr ough analy sis of the inter lang uage features displa yed ther eof; 2) to ex-
plor e the causes o f such feat ur es and er r or s based o n the statistics and descr iptio n o f t he patter ns o f co llocation exam-
ined ; and 3) to sugg est the peda go gical implications of the findings . It ha s been discov ered that the college lear ner s
ha ve ex plicit featur es in their use o f v erb-noun co llocations, which hav e show n hig her frequency of err or s than a ny
other co llo cat ion patter ns, and such err or s ar e mor e ser io us than gr ammatical err or s a s they cause v agueness and am-
big uity in expr essio ns and co mmunicatio n failur e. T he students' err o rs in ver b-noun co llocat ions have show n t hat
ver bs and no uns play cr ucial ro les and create majo r pro blems a s w ell in the v ocabular y study . T he majo r cause of such
err or s co uld be att ributed t o the neg ativ e t ransfer of the mother tong ue. W hen the pat terns of the co llocation incr ease
in leng th, less mo ther tong ue tr ansfer is fo und as t he student s r ely mor e o n their ex istent lexical know ledg e t o fulfill
their tasks. T he pedag og ical implicat ion is that emphasis and concentrat ion o n the collocations a nd usag e of the com-
mo n ver bs and nouns in lig ht o f t heir actual contex t and co llo cat ional r estrictio ns will help impr ov e the lear ners lex ical
lear ning efficiency and enhance their w r iting ability .
