Abstract Applying what RT and systemic and functional grammar say respect ively about context to an
examination of coherence in translated texts and translation unit , the author compares the explanatory powers of
these two theories and concludes that their specific strengths and weaknesses notwithstanding, the two theories
are complementary in addressing issues in translation.
