Completions: the interface between the reservoir and
surface production.

The role of the completion designer: to take a well

that has been drilled and convert it into a safe and
efcient production or injection conduit.

Completion design: a mix of physics, chemistry,

math., eng., geo., hydraulics, material science and
practical hands-on wellsite experience. => to balance
the theoretical with the practical.

In the development of a hydrocarbon reservoir, a large
number of wells are drilled and require to be
completed, to allow the structure to be depleted.
However, the drilling and completion operations are
crucial to the long term viability of the wells in
meeting the specified objectives.

The design and completion of both production and

injection wells are required to satisfy a number of
objectives including:

1. Provision of opt. production/injection performance.

2. Ensure safety.

3. Maximise the integrity and reliability of the completion over the

envisaged life of the completed well

4. Minimise the total costs per unit volume of fluid produced or

injected, i.e. minimise the costs of initial completion, maintaining
production and remedial measures.

Depending upon the reservoir characteristics or

development constraints, the completion may be required
to fulfil other criteria, e.g. to control sand production.

The design of a completion can therefore be assumed
to proceed concurrently at two different levels. The
initial intention would be to produce a conceptual design, or a
series of alternatives. From these conceptual designs, one or
more would be selected for more detailed development.

=> a detailed design process would be pursued with

the intention of producing a completion string design
which specifies all components and also assesses the sensitivity of
the well and completion performance to variations in the reservoir
data used for the design.

The fundamental design of a completion consists of
four principal decision areas, namely:

1. Specification of the bottom hole completion technique.

2. Selection of the production conduit.

3. Assessment of completion string facilities.

4. Evaluation of well performance / productivity-

injectivity

Statement of requirements (SOR):

Pulling together the data the will be incorporated into

design.

Incorporate reservoir and production data and an

expectation of what completion needs to achieve over
the life of the field.

Basis of design:

Outlines the main decisions made in the completion

design & their justification.

Forms the basis designed of reviews by colleagues,

internal or external specialists & vendors.

Includes the basic installation steps & design risk

assessments.

Includes major decisions s.a the requirement for sand

control, stimulation, tubing size & artificial lift

Completion procedures

Installation procedures are reviewed and agreed by all

parties involved.

Reviews and issuing procedures should precede

mobilization of equipment and personnel.

Post-completion report

Reports well status in detailed.

Reports results and lessons learnt.

Includes a detailed schematic (with serial numbers,

equip specifications, dimensions and depths), a tubing
tally, pressure test details and plots, summaries of
vendor reports, etc.

=>This document is critical for any engineer planning a

Wells can be producers or injectors.
can produce oil, gas and water.

can inject hydrocarbon gas, water, steam and waste products

can be combined either simultaneously (e.g. produce the tubing

and inject down the annulus) or sequentially (produce
hydrocarbons and then convert to water injection duty).

Completions are often divided into:

reservoir completion (connection between reservoir & well) and

upper completion (conduit from reservoir completion to surface

facilities).

Major decisions in the reservoir completion are:

Well trajectory and inclination

Open hole vs. cased hole

Sand control requirement and type of sand control

Stimulation (proppant or acid)
