Mechatronics 6 6.1 Caso Study 1: Mechatronics Design of Coin Counter Objective ® To design a coin counter which accepts mixed denomination of coins. The system should identify the denomination of coins through sensors. The sensor output is to be interfaced to clectronic circuitry that should indicate number of coins presented and total value of coins. These two values must be displayed in multiplexed display. Design solution = The given design can be divided into two parts 1. Mechanical design 2. Electronic design Applications of Mechatronics 4 as Case Study ‘The mechanical design involves sequential alignment of coins and should be sensed by an array of sensors. The electronic design involves, design of a calculator to user sensor data to display the count and value of coins ‘There should be proper interfacing of these two parts, 4. Mechanical design It requires a chamber to accept mixed denomination of coins and mechanism to present the coins to sensor array which can read their attributes and output digital signals for computations. A typical horizontal slotted design is shown in Fig. 61. Funnel Hots |] ve \ poole Fig. 64 Horizontal slotted disk design Mach 6-2 mn = DC motor is used to perforated disk, as disc rotates, the coin drops into the / slot which contains array of sensors. As the size, weight and thickness of every coin is unique for different coins. This feature of coin is used to determine the value of coins by a well-designed sensing system. Electronic design = For determining combination of exch different denominations a set of pholotransistor - photodiode pairs are used. The signal from these sensors are pulses of different widths with different starting times depending on size and speed of coin. Fig. 62 shows sensor array arrangement. A sequential logic circuit is designed to identify the coin correctly. The Boolean expressions for the different denominations coins is to be developed eg x= KET where ~ A, B, C corresponds to sensor output ‘The accumulated coin value is displayed by suitable display driver and ‘multiplexer circuit. Walking Machine Objective Design a robotic walking machine with the following specifications ~ Mechanical motion of articulated leg with pneumatic cylinders = A computer controlled interface for pneumatic system, = Sensors for avoiding obstacle.
