magnetizeferritewithrareearthPMenergy? 4

thread340341031

We'relookingatmagnetizingasmallbondedferritemagnetusingsinteredneodymiummagnets.Itlooksdoable,butI'm
confusedabouttheenergyaspectsofthissystem.

Lookingatthemaxenergyproducts,bondedferritesareroughly1.5MGOe,whileN52magnetsare52MGOe.Multiplying
throughtheirrespectivevolumesIgetenergiesof7mJfortheferritepartand13Jfortheneomagnets,aratioofabout
20kJ/J.

Ofcoursethisisasimplificationasneitherwillbeoperatingattheirmaximumenergypotentials,butwhatelseismissing
here?Doesthisimplythatthissystemwilldemagnetizetheneomagnetsover(veryroughly)20kparts?

ThemagnetizingsystemI'vedrawnupinFEAutilizesasteelyokeandhasarelativelysmallairgap,anditappearsthatthe
neomagnetsareoperatingatagoodpermeancecoefficientandarenotatriskofdemagnetizing...isthisnotthecase?

Don'tgobyenergyproduct.ThemagneticfieldoutputoftheN52magnetsinthemagnetizingfixture(asanassembly)
needstobecomparedtothecoercivityofthebondedferritematerial.Asageneralruleofthumb,themagneticfield
producedbythemagnetizingfixtureneedstobeatleast3xthecoercivity.

BTW:NdFeBmagnetsareoftentimesusedtomagnetizedflexibleferritestripmaterial.Withthecorrectconfiguration,it
shouldworkforyourbondedferritemagnet.

IunderstandthatIneedtogenerateacertainfieldstrengthtosaturatetheferrite.

Myquestionisessentially,wheredoestheenergycomefrom?Doestheenergytransferfromthemagnetizingsystemto
thepartasit'smagnetized?(Ithastocomefromsomewhere...)Doesthisenergytransferslowlydemagnetizetheneo
magnets?

TrytoplacethebondedferritemagnetononepoleoftheN52andtrytoimpactotherN52magnetontheotherpoleofthe
ferritemagnetsoyoudolikesomeimpulsefluxflowthroughtheferritemagnet.

Ihaveneverdonethis,butIfeelthisshuouldworktomagnetizetheferritemagnet.Takecarethatyourimpactshouldnot

ndsram,thatwouldnotwork,andisunnecessaryanyways.Also,itdoesn'taddressmyquestions.

IalreadyhaveasolutiontocreatethenecessaryfieldstrengthfromPMs,justwonderingaboutenergyandlongevity.

YouwillnotslowlydemagnetizetheNeomagnet.TheNdFeBproducesamagneticfield,notenergy.Theenergytransfer
comesfromthemotionofbringingtheNeomagnetclosetotheferrite.

MagMikealreadyaddressedyourconcerns.Thereisnoconservationofmagnetisminvolved.Unlessyouhavean

havenoproblems.Theenergyproductisameasureofhowmuchenergyitwouldtaketodemagnetizethemagnetic,but
youneedtohaveanopposingfieldtomakethathappen.YourferritewillneverbeconfiguredtoopposethePM'sfield,and
evenifyoudo,thePM'sfieldwouldoverridethatoftheferrite,sincethePM'sfieldismuchstronger.

ThanksMagMikeforyouranswer.

YouneednottoworryaboutthelongevityoftheNdFeBMagnet(magneticfield).Becauseyouneed3xtimestheCoercivity
