Lesson Idea Name: The Flinstone Chemical Reaction

Content Area: Chemistry
Grade Level(s): 10th -11th
Content Standard Addressed: SC3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how the Law of
Conservation of Matter is used to determine chemical composition in compounds and chemical reactions.
a. Use mathematics and computational thinking to balance chemical reactions (i.e., synthesis,
decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion) and construct an
explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron
states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical
properties.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others. Students:
a. plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
b. evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of information, media, data or other
resources.
c. curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of
artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and
pursuing answers and solutions

Lesson idea implementation:

The first 20 minutes of class I will introduce the topic by showing the IMovie about the five different chemical
reactions (synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, and double replacement, and combustion). The next
30 minutes, students will take guided-notes on the rules of chemical reactions. The guided-notes will serve as
a reinforcement about chemical reactions, and will tend to the different learning styles. Students will be given
a worksheet that has a series of equations to balance and determine the chemical reactions of the equation. I
will be walking around the classroom to help any student that might be struggling with the worksheet.

After students complete the worksheet, they will be put in groups of 3-4 to participate in a game of jeopardy.
The jeopardy game will have a series of questions, from balancing equation and determining the type of
reaction. The last 15 minutes of class, students will be given an homework assignment to creating a IMovie
explaining one of the chemical reaction. Students will be given a rubric to follow to ensure they follow the
guidelines to create the IMovie. IMovie will act as a formal assessment for me to gauge my student
understanding on the concept of chemical reaction.

Importance of technology: Using multimedia authoring tool is critical to the project because it promotes
creativity, student learning, and engage learners. It gives students the opportunity to organize their ideas and
display their knowledge. This project can be completed without technology by using basic productivity tool
such as PowerPoint and Word. Without the implementation of IMovie students would lose that student
engagement and creativity. The other technology that will be incorporated in this lesson in PowerPoint via
interactive white board.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project (Whether in part or
whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Copyright violations will be the biggest issue when discussing Internet
safety. When creating the IMovie, I will be sure to include in the rubric the rules when using images and video
from the internet. To eliminate the violation of student privacy, I will not publically release the students
IMovie unless the parent have signed a consent form to do so. It is also important to explain to the students
the importance of the Internet Safety/ Acceptable Use policies such as CIPA, FERPA, and COPPA
