PART- A

10x1=10M

a)Define Inundation Irrigation.

b) Define Base Period and Crop Period.
c)What is Gross command area ?
d)Define Base flow.
e)Define S Hydrograph.
f) Define Aquiclude.
g)What is a Ridge canal?
h)What is meant by balancing depth?
i)What is a canal head work?
j)What is a barrage?

PART- B 4x15=60

UNIT -I

1. a)Explain the terms duty and delta. Derive the relation between duty, delta and base period. 7M

b)After how many days will you order irrigation, to ensure healthy growth of crops if,
Field Capacity of soil 29%, Permanent wilting percentage - 11%, density of soil is 1300kg/m3,
effective depth of root zone 700mm, daily consumptive of water for the given crop is 12mm. For
healthy growth moisture content must not fall below 25% of the water holding capacity will be
between field capacity and permanent wilting point. 8M

OR

2. a)Explain different methods of improving soil fertility. 7M

b)Briefly explain the functions of irrigation water. 8M

UNIT -II

3. a) Ordinates of a 2 hours unit hydrograph are given below. Using this derive the ordinates for a
6 hour unit hydrograph for the same catchment. 7M

Time (hr) 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22
Discharge (cumec) 0 25 100 160 200 170 110 70 30 20 8 0
b)What are the different types of Rain gauges? Explain with neat diagram. 8M

OR

4. a) Describe Constant level pumping test for an open well 7M

b) Derive an expression for discharge in case of an confined aquifer. 8M

UNIT -III

5. a)Using Lacey's theory design the irrigation channel for the following data.
Full Supply Discharge = 10 cumec
Lacey's Slit factor = 0.9
Channel Side slope = 1/2(H) : 1(V)
Also find the bed slope of channel. 7M

b) Discuss the drawbacks of Kennedy's theory. 8M

OR
6. a) What is Waterlogging? What are the ill-effects of Waterlogging? 7M
b) Design a trapezoidal shaped concrete lined channel to carry a discharge of 200 cumec at a slope
of 30 cm/km. The side slope of the channel are 1.5 : 1. The value of N may be taken as 0.017.
Assume limiting velocity in the channel as 2 m/s. 8M

UNIT -IV
7. a) What is a fall in a canal? why is it necessary to provide a fall in a canal? 7M

b) Discuss Bligh's Creep theory for the design of weir constructed over pervious foundation. 8 M

OR

8. a)What is a cross regulators? What are functions of a cross regulator? 7M

b) What is a canal escape? What are the different types of canal escapes? 8M
