SeeSecurityModulew/Antenna.TheHarleyDavidsonSmartSecuritySystem(HDSSS)
consistsofaHandsFreeSecurityModule(HFSM)(1)andaHandsFreeAntenna(2)mountedon
themotorcycle,andaHandsFreeFobcarriedbytherider/passenger.

Afterparkingthemotorcycle,turntheignitionkeytoOFFandtheSmartSecuritySystemwill
automaticallyarmwithinfiveseconds.Whilearmed,thestarterandignitionaredisabledandthe
ridermayleavethemotorcycleknowingthatthemodulewillactivateanalarmifsomeone
tamperswiththeignitionorattemptstomovethemotorcycle.

Ifthefobispresent,themodulewillautomaticallydisarmwhentheignitionkeyisturnedto
IGNITIONorACCESS.

NOTE:

Donotrelocatethemoduleortheantennaonthemotorcycle.

recognizeafob'suniquesignal.Onlytwofobscanbeassignedtothemoduleatanyonetime.

Replacementfobscanbepurchasedfromadealershipbutcanonlybeassignedtothemotorcycle
byatrainedHarleyDavidsontechnician.

RidingwithaFob
 Alwayscarrythefobwhenriding,loading,fueling,moving,parkingorservicingthe
motorcycle.Carrythefobinaconvenientpocket.
DonotleavethefobattachedtothehandlebarsorstorethefobinasaddlebagorTour
Pak.Unintentionallyleavingthefobwiththemotorcyclewhenit'sparkedpreventsthe
systemfromactivatingthealarm.
Donotridewiththefobstoredinametalcaseorwiththefobcloserthan3.0in.(76
mm)toacellphone,PDA,displayorotherelectronicdevice.Anyelectromagnetic
interferencemaypreventthefobfromdisarmingthesystem.
Foraddedsecurity,alwayslocktheforkandremovetheignitionkeywhenparked.Ifthe
fobiswithinrangeandthemotorcycleisunlocked,tamperingwiththemotorcyclewill
notactivatethealarm.

PersonalIdentificationNumber(PIN)

ThePersonalIdentificationNumber(PIN)isanumberthatcanbeusedtodisarmtheHarley
DavidsonSmartSecuritySystemincaseanassignedfobismisplaced,failsorifthefoband
modulecannotcommunicatebecauseofelectromagneticinterference.

Armed:Akeyiconthatblinksapproximatelyevery3secondsindicatesthatthesystem
isarmed.
Disarmed:Aftertheignition/headlampswitchisturnedtoIGNITIONandthesystem
disarms,thekeyiconwillremainilluminatedforapproximatelyfoursecondsandthen
turnoff.
Service:Akeyiconthatremainsilluminatedlongerthanfoursecondsindicatesthat
serviceofthemoduleisrequired.

ArmingandDisarming

Arming

WhenthemotorcycleisparkedandtheignitionkeyisturnedtoOFF,theHarleyDavidsonSmart
SecuritySystemarmsautomaticallywithinfivesecondsifnomotionisdetected.Evenwhenthe
fobispresent,thesystemwillarm.

Onarming,theturnsignalswillflashtwiceandtheoptionalsirenwillchirptwice.Whilearmed,
thekeyiconinthespeedometerfacewillflasheverythreeseconds.

NOTE:

InternationalModels:TheHFSMmustbeintheChirpModeforthesirentochirponarmingor
ondisarming.SeeSirenChirpless/ChirpModes:InternationalModels.

Disarming

Oncedisarmed,theridermayrideormovethemotorcycleforparking,storageorservicewithout
settingoffthealarm.

Fob:AnarmedSmartSecuritySystemisautomaticallydisarmedwhentheignitionkeyisturned
toIGNITIONwiththefobpresent.

Whenthemoduledisarms,theoptionalsirenwillchirponceandthekeyiconwillilluminatefora
solidfoursecondsandthenturnoff.

NOTE:

Anymotion,likeliftingthemotorcycleupoffofitsjiffystand,orturningtheignitionkeyto
IGNITIONandthemodulewillelectronically"poll"forthepresenceofthefob.Ifthefobis
present,thesystemdisarms.

PersonalIdentificationNumber(PIN):Ifthefobismisplacedorifthepresentfobfailsto
communicatewiththemodule,thesystemcanbedisarmedwiththePersonalIdentification

Alarm

Warnings

Oncearmed,ifthemotorcycleismovedorliftedupoffofitsjiffystandoriftheignitionkeyis
turnedtoIGNITIONandthefobisnotpresent,thealarmwillwarntheoperatorwiththree
alternateflashesoftheturnsignalsandachirpoftheoptionalsiren.

Withinfourseconds,ifthemotorcycleisbackonitsjiffystandandnofurthermotionisdetected
and/ortheignitionkeyisturnedtoOFF,themodulewillremainarmedwithoutactivatingthe
alarm.

IfthemotorcyclemotioncontinuesortheignitionkeyisnotturnedbacktoOFF,themodulewill
issueasecondwarningfoursecondsafterthefirst.

NOTE:

Duringwarningsandalarms,thestartermotorandtheignitioncircuitsaredisabled.

TheAlarm

IftheSmartSecuritySystemisstilldetectingmotionand/oriftheignitionkeyhasnotbeen
turnedbacktoOFFafterasecondwarning,thesystemwillactivatethealarm.
Whenactivated,theSmartSecuritySystemwill:

Alternatelyflashthefourturnsignals.
SeeOptionalSmartSiren.Soundtheoptionalsiren.

Duration:Thealarmwillstopwithin30secondsandifnomotionisdetected,thealarmwillnot
restart.

However,ifmotorcyclemotioncontinuesthesystemwillrepeatthe30secondalarmandrecheck
formotion.Thealarmwillrepeatthis30secondalarmcycleforfiveminutes(10cycles)oruntil
thealarmisdeactivated.

NOTE:

ThealarmwillalsoactivatetheLED,vibrationoraudiblemodesofaHarleyDavidsonSecurity
Pager.ApagercanoperateeitherinsilentorincombinationwithanoptionalSmartSiren.The

KeyFob:Bringthefobtothemotorcycle.Afterthemoduleidentifiesthatthefobispresent,the
systemwillterminatethealarm.

SirenChirpless/ChirpModes:InternationalModels

ChirplessMode

IntheChirplessMode,thesirendoesnotchirponarmingordisarming.

NOTE:

Evenwhenarmedinthechirplessmode,thesirenstillchirpswarningsonmovementandwill
activatethealarmthroughallalarmcycles.

ChirpMode

OnarmingintheChirpMode,thesirenrespondswithtwochirps.Whendisarming,thesiren
respondswithasinglechirp.

SwitchingModes

Cyclingquicklythrougharminganddisarmingtwicewillswitchthesystemfromeitherthe
chirplessorthechirpmodetoitsopposite.

1. Withthefobpresent,theignitionkeyONandthesystemdisarmed,turntheignitionkey
OFF.
 2. Whenthesystemarms(2flashesofturnsignals),immediatelyturntheignitionkeyback
ON.

3. Whenthesystemdisarms(1flashoftheturnsignals),immediatelyturntheignitionkey
OFF.

4. Whenthesystemarms(2flashesofturnsignals),immediatelyturntheignitionkeyON
andwaitforthesystemtoarm.

TransportMode

Inthetransportmode,theHarleyDavidsonSmartSecuritySystemisarmedbutthemotion
detectorsareinactive.Themotorcyclecanbetransportedonatrailerormovedinstorage
withoutactivatingthealarmwhilethestarterandignitionremaindisabled.

ToEnterTransportMode

1. Withthefobpresent,turntheignitionkeytoIGNITION.

2. RocktheengineOFF/RUNswitchtoOFF.

3. Withanassignedfobwithinrange,turntheignitionkeyfromOFFtoACCESS.

4. Simultaneouslypressboththeleftandrightturnsignalswitches.Theturnsignalswill
flashonce.

5. TurntheignitionkeytoOFFtoarmthesystem.Theturnsignalswillflashthreetimesas
thesystemarmsinthetransportmode.

ToExittheTransportMode

Withafobpresent,turntheignitionkeytoIGNITIONandtheengineOFF/RUNswitchtoRUN.
ThesystemexitsthetransportmodewhentheOFF/RUNswitchisinRUN.

StorageandServiceDepartments

LongTermParking

Tomaintainarming,storethefobbeyondtherangeofthemodule.Ifthemotorcycleistobe
movedwhileparked,havethefobpresent.

Ifthemotorcyclewillnotbeoperatedforseveralmonths,suchasduringthewinterseason,
followtheOwner'sManualinstructionsforstorage.RefertoMotorcycleStorage.

ServiceDepartments

WhenthemotorcycleistobeleftataHarleyDavidsondealer,therearetwooptions:

1. Leaveanassignedfobwiththedealer.

2. Tomaintainpossessionofthefob,askthedealertodisablethemoduleforservice
(servicemode)beforeleavingthedealership.

FobBattery

ReplacingtheBattery
Replacethekeyfobbatteryeveryyear.

1. SeeHandsFreeFobBattery.Slowlyturnathinbladeinthethumbnailslot(1)onthe
sideofthefobtoseparatethetwohalves.

Ifthesystemkeyiconstaysilluminatedwhileriding,seeaHarleyDavidsondealer.

Fob

Withthefobpresent,iftheSmartSecuritySystemcontinuestoactuatewarningsandalarms,
oneofthefollowingcanbethecause:

1. ElectromagneticInterference:Otherelectronicdevices,powerlines,orother
electromagneticsourcescancausetheSmartSecuritySystemtooperateinconsistently.

a. Verifythatthefobisnotinametalenclosureorwithin3.0in.(76mm)ofany
otherelectronicdevices.
 b. PlacethefobontheseatandturntheignitionkeytoIGNITION.Afterthemodule
disarms,returnthefobtoaconvenientlocation.

c. Movemotorcycleatleast15feet(5m)fromthespotofinterference.

2. DischargedFobBattery:UsethePINtodisarmthemodule.Replacethebattery.Refer
toFobBattery.

3. ADamagedFob:UsethePINtodisarmthemotorcycle.Replacementfobsareavailable
forpurchasefromaHarleyDavidsondealer.

Siren

Ifthesirendoesnotchirptwoorthreetimesonavalidarmingcommandfromthe
securitymodule,thesireniseitherintheChirplessMode,notconnected,notworking,or
thesirenwiringwasopenedorshortedwhilethesirenwasdisarmed.
Ifthesirenisarmedandtheinternalsirenbatteryisdead,shorted,disconnected,orhas
beenchargingforaperiodlongerthan24hours,thesirenwillrespondwiththreechirps
onarminginsteadoftwo.
Theinternalsirenbatterymaynotchargeifthevehicle'sbatteryislessthan12.5volts.
Ifthesirenenterstheselfdrivenmodewhereitispoweredfromthesiren'sinternal9
voltbattery,theturnsignallampsmayormaynotalternatelyflash.Ifthesecurity
moduleactivatesthesiren,theturnsignallampswillalternatelyflash.Ifthesirenhas
beenarmedandasecurityeventoccurs,andthesirenisinselfdrivenmode,thesiren
willalarmfor20to30secondsandthenturnofffor5to10seconds.Thisalarmcycle
willberepeatedtentimesifthesirenisintheselfdrivenmode.
