According to co-founder Jeff Hunt,
maintaining product quality was the
brewers over-riding objective when it
contemplated expanding production to
meet increased customer demand. "Since
water makes up 95% of beer, water quality
plays an important part influencing our beers
flavor profile. As we planned for our new,
expanded production facility it was critical to
us to be able to control the incoming water of
our brewing process to insure we maintained
consistent quality and taste of the beers. As
such, we didn't want a standard RO unit.
Hunt continued: What we found most
appealing about Veolia's RO technology was
its ability to provide feedback, which will
allow us to fine-tune the incoming water as
needed to be able to produce the high quality
of beers our customers expect. Moving ahead

Paulaner

T he Paulaner brewery is one of the best-

known German breweries, with a long
tradition of the finest Munich art of brewing.
The annual production exceeds 2 million
hectoliters. The popularity of Paulaner beer
has always extended beyond the city limits of
Munich, both nationally and internationally.
Paulaner beer is enjoyed in more than 70
countries worldwide.
The challenge
Due to the increasing popularity
of Paulaner beer the existing
production site Nockherberg
in the center of Munich
reached its limits. In order
to secure ample capacities
for future growth, Paulaner
decided to move the production
to Munich-Langwied. The new
site has sufficient space as well as
excellent connections to the highway.
The new brewery had to be built with an
emphasis on modern and environmentally
friendly brewery technology as well as an
energy and emission-optimized infrastructure.
The solution
The beer production process generates
organically loaded wastewater streams which
are easily biodegradable. With conventional
biological treatment, biological degradation is
achieved by using aerobic organisms. These,
however, need to be fed with oxygen, resulting
in high operating costs and CO2 emissions.
Paulaner selected an environmentally friendly
anaerobic treatment. The degradation
process does not need oxygen, so the energy
consumption is considerably reduced. Another
advantage is the production of energy-rich
biogas, which can be used on site in the boiler
house.
To ensure a high level of operational
reliability for their future
wastewater treatment, Paulaner
chose the proven Biobed system
supplied by Aquantis, a German
subsidiary of the leading Veolia
Water Technologies group.

gathering (a religious observance of Ramadan,
when people break their fast together) at the
Roda Al Murooj hotel in Dubai.

Asthmatics, rejoice!
As technology advances, so does the waste
products we create. We can clearly see its effects
deteriorating our environment and its wildlife, and
its really sad. Whats even worse is the pollution
that spreads into the air. Car exhaust and smoke
from factories emit pollutants into the air, and the
effects can be felt almost immediately. While there
are many organizations that are trying to clean up
the air (and our entire planet in general), the only
thing we can do as individuals is reduce our waste
and avoid air polluted areas.
Heres the thing though: We have no idea
which places in our environment is polluted and
which is not. I mean, sure, we can get a general
idea, but contaminants in the air can change
on an almost daily basis. And if you have any
respiratory conditions like asthma, it can be pretty
dangerous.
This is why Google Maps is developing their
newest feature: a map that shows the air quality
around you, block per block.
The map is so far only available in the areas inside
Oakland, California, but its already pretty neat. It
was made in partnership with the Environmental
Defense Fund (EDF) and Aclima. Aclima is a
startup company that equipped and designed the
sensing system to measure pollution and other
environmental changes in the Bay Area, Central
Valley and Los Angeles.
EDF made the map with Aclimas data that was
collected through a sensor system on Googles
StreetView cars during the entire project. Now,
the map can give you data up to the street level
about areas with higher amounts of nitric oxide
(NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and black carbon.
Basically, most of the pollutants coming from car
exhaust.
Google is pretty proud of their work, saying that
its pollution data set is the largest one to ever be
published, With nearly 3 million measurements
and 14,000 miles captured in the course of a
year. Now, were pretty excited as to what cities
theyre going to apply the technology to next, as
Google is already in the process of doing so. Its
not only a useful tool for environmental scientists,
but also a literal life saver for those suffering from
respiratory diseases.

 What is CFC in the HVACR Industry?
In the HVACR industry, refrigerants are essential in any HVAC operation. To be able
to understand CFCs further, lets start by learning what it really is.
In the HVAC industry, it is known that
refrigerants are essential in any HVAC operation.
Unfortunately, these refrigerants have a large
impact on our environment. For decades, CFCs
have already been known to deplete ozone and
are also to blame for global warming. To be able
to understand CFCs further, lets start by learning
what it really is.
CFC stands for chlorofluorocarbon. It is an
organic compound that contains carbon,
chlorine and fluorine, which is produced
as a volatile derivative of methane and
ethane. It has a common subclass called
hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) which
contains hydrogen. CFCs and its related
compounds are known by different names.
They are known around the world as Algofrene,
Arcton, Asahiflon, Daiflon, Eskimo, FCC, Flon,
Flugene, Forane, Freon, Fridohna, Frigen,
Frigedohn, Genetron, Isceon, Isotron, Kaiser,
Kaltron, Khladon, Ledon, Racon and Ucon.
The most common representative of this is
dichlorodifluoromethane (R-12 or Freon-12)

CFCs were developed back in the 1930s as
a safe, non-toxic, non-flammable alternative
to different dangerous substances such as
ammonia which is used in refrigeration and spray
can propellants. They have also been used for
foamed plastics like expanded polysterene or
polyurethane foam for insulation products. The
use of these family of compounds has grown
exponentially over the years. One of the elements
that make up CFCs is chlorine. Chlorine exists
in the atmosphere naturally, but in very small
amounts and it so happens that CFCs are a way
of introducing this into the ozone layer. Studies
have shown that CFCs that are released into the
atmosphere are accumulated in the stratosphere,
where they cause deteriorating effects on the
ozone layer. The ozone shields living organisms
on Earth from Suns ultraviolet radiation. In the
stratosphere, the molecules of CFC break down
due to the action of solar ultraviolet radiation and
release the chlorine atoms. These then react with
the ozone molecules and in turn gets depleted.
CFC Alternatives It was in the late 1970s when
researchers and scientists have been working
on alternatives for CFCs in refrigerants. It was
then that the first warnings of damage to the
stratospheric ozone were published. HCFCs are
less stable in the lower atmosphere, which allows
them to break down even before they reach the
ozone layer. But there is still a significant fraction
of HCFCs that break down in the stratosphere
which has contributed to significant chlorine
buildup. Later on, alternatives that lack chlorine
have been created. HFC-134a, for example, is
now used instead of CFC-12 in automobile air
conditioners. Most rubber insulation products in
the UAE, such as insulation sheets and rubber
insulation pipes are now also CFC-free.
Refrigerators from the 1800s until 1929 used toxic
gases for refrigerants, namely: ammonia (NH3),
methyl chloride (CH3Cl), and sulfur dioxide (SO2).
There have been several fatal accidents that
happened in the 1920s due to methyl chloride
leakages from refrigerators. People then began
to leave their refrigerators in their backyards.
It was then that three American corporations:
Frigidaire, General Motors and DuPont worked
together to search for a less dangerous method of
refrigeration.
In 1928, Freon was invented by Thomas
Midgley, Jr. and Charles Franklin Kettering.
Freon represents different CFCs. These CFCs
are a group of aliphatic organic compounds that
contain the elements carbon and fluorine, and
other halogens like chlorine and hydrogen. Freons
are known to be colorless, non-corrosive, non-
flammable, and odorless gases or liquids.
CFC and the Environment In 1978, the Montreal
Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone
Layer, also known as the Montreal Protocol
was adopted. It is an international treaty that
has been designed to protect the ozone layer
by steadily phasing out the production of
numerous substances that are responsible for
the depletion of the ozone. Through the years, it
has undergone several revisions, and as a result
of this international agreements, the ozone hole
that is in Antarctica is slowly recovering. Climate
projections show that the ozone layer will return to
1980 levels in the years 2050 to 2070.

in wastewater treatment plants. The direct drive
with permanent magnet motor reduces energy
of 30% can be achieved by using the Smart
Process Control control system.

costs for the aeration of sludge tanks in
wastewater treatment plants.
The ROBOX energy series is the first to
consistently utilise the possibilities of gearless,
direct drive technology with permanent magnet
motors. The advantage of these synchronous
motors is that they offer excellent controllability
within a large speed range while maintaining a
high level of efficiency.
The low power consumption of these electric
motors better than IE4 and the integration of
the control technology in the overall wastewater
treatment plant system results in energy
benefits in comparison to the blowers that were
previously used in this area with conventional
three-phase asynchronous motors, which drive
the compressor screws via gears.
With these new compressors, it is possible to
reduce the high energy costs for generating blow
air for the biological treatment stage, in which
bacteria break down the organic components of
the wastewater, by around 30% in comparison
to the rotary lobe blowers which are normally
used. This means that owners of wastewater
treatment plants in communal or industrial areas
can breathe easy, as they rank as one of the
largest energy consumers and more than 40%
of their overall energy requirement is due to the
sludge tanks. Here, there is enormous potential
for reducing costs and increasing efficiency
which can be tapped with the ROBOX energy
technology.
The fact that the drive of the oil-free, proven
Robuschi screw compressor block with patented
rotors now works directly, i.e. without belt and
gear, through the permanent magnet motor
technology brings twofold benefits: the optimum
ratio between the delivery rate and pressure,
which the rotors generate, enables the high level
of efficiency to be maintained from low to high
speeds. The new drive covers the large speed
range with high efficiency, and the fluctuating air
volume requirement in the settling basin even
or especially for low volume flows can therefore
be precisely controlled. The drive control unit, a
frequency converter, is decentrally housed in an
integrated and air conditioned electrical control
cabinet.
In addition to the aforementioned 30%, users
of ROBOX energy screw compressors can also
benefit from even further energy saving potential.
The Smart Process Control control system
lowers the energy requirement even further
in practice by around 20 to 30%, by ensuring
that only the required amount of compressed
air or blow air is provided. This is achieved by
analysing the oxygen data acquired during the
treatment process, i.e., by intelligently linking to
the process control system of the wastewater
treatment plant.
Its compact design is another plus point. In
comparison to the ROBOX SCREW series with
conventional drive, the space required has
been reduced by approximately 1/3. This is an
important factor when it comes to equipping
existing wastewater treatment plants and other
plants with energy-saving compressor and
blower technology.
The ROBOX energy screw compressors are
controlled via an operating unit with touchscreen.
The intuitive menu structure is user-friendly and
parametrisation can be carried out conveniently
via Ethernet or Internet. This means that it
also meets the requirements for online remote
diagnostics and continuous plant monitoring.
Recently Gardner Denver has won the
prestigious Environmental and Energy Efficiency
award for its ROBOX energy screw compressor,
at this years Motion Control Industry Awards
2017. This prize is an important milestone in the
companys history and in its efforts to promote
green technologies.

 AIRFILTER News: ISO 16890 Is Live
And Replaces EN779:2012
The ISO 16890 standard is LIVE and is the new
global standard for testing and classification of
air filters, and replaces the existing EN779:2012
norm. This new ISO 16890 standard is a big
change in the way air filters are evaluated.

explains the new ISO 16890 standard to us.
AFPRO Filters stands out from all other air filter
manufacturers because it manufacturers its own
glass fiber filter medium for the best protection
against particulate matter (PM1) according
ISO16890. AFPRO Filters tests all its air filters
according to this new ISO16890 standard
on their own ISO16890 test rig in its Alkmaar
Laboratory in The Netherlands.
This new ISO 16890 test standard for air filters
has been published in December 2016.
Why a new filtration standard ISO
16890?
The new ISO16890 test method shifts the

focus on filtration performance to the classes
of particulate matter size (PM) and is therefore
a much more realistic test criteria than the
theoretical EN779:2012.
What is different?
This means that with the new ISO 16890
standard filter efficiencies will be determined
based on particulate matter size classes
PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 which are also used
as evaluation parameters by the WHO (World
Health Organization) and other authorities.
Based on these parameters it will be easier for
users to select the right air filter based on their
requirements.
ISO 16890 The new group classification
The new ISO16890 standard divides air filters
into four groups. A prerequisite for each group
is that a filter captures at least 50% of the
appropriate particle size range. If a filter, for
example, captures more than 50% of PM1
particles, it will be grouped as an ISO ePM1
filter. The respective efficiency is then reported,
rounded in 5 % increments.
Alongside fine dust filters, the new ISO standard also evaluates coarse dust filters as ISO coarse: that
is, filters that capture less than 50 % PM10.

What does PM1 mean?

PM1 means all Particulate Matter with size smaller than 1 micron (a thousandth of a millimetre), just
to be clear:
1= 0.001mm
2.5= 0.0025mm
10= 0.01mm

ISO 16890 Group classification:

With the introduction of the new ISO16890 standard, actual operating conditions will be more
effectively taken into account. Instead of considering only the particle size 0.4 microns (EN779:2012),
as previously, a broad range between 0.3 microns and 10 microns will be used to determine
separation efficiencies for particulate matter fractions PM10, PM2,5 and PM1 (ISO 16890).

In order for an air filter to be rated to PM1 or any of the other PM sizes it will need to demonstrate a
minimum efficiency of 50% and this will be recorded incrementally to the closest 5% so an air filter
performing at 66% to PM1 particles will be rated at ePM1 65%.

For coarse filters the new standard will include filters that capture less than 50% of particles in the
PM10 range, these will be known as ISO Coarse and will detail their PM10 performance i.e. PM
Coarse 45%.

Comparing EN779 with ISO16890 classes

A simple translation of classes ISO 16890 to EN779:2012 fails because of the very different measurement
and assessment methods. As of today there is no standard table available. As a guide, we initially offer the

General Electrics Beijing Technology Park (GE
BTP) is an energy efficient hub for GE in Beijing
that has been in operation since October 2016.
It has successfully applied Johnson Controls
advanced building technologies and solutions
and achieved 20% annual operating cost
reduction (approximately US$300,000 in energy
savings annually).The LEED certified GE BTP
provides over 3,000 employees with a green and
comfortable work environment, and is testament
to a corporate culture that values efficiency and
performance.
Spread over 75,000 square meters, the GE BTP
houses multiple business units under one roof,
and includes a main functional area with offices,
laboratories and complementary facilities. The
green features of this campus include an open
office concept to encourage closer collaboration
and resource-sharing, and a car-lite culture that
gives parking priority to vehicle owners who
actively car pools. These are just a few examples
of the green initiatives that have been rolled-out
as part of being a LEED certified building not
only should the building and the users work to
reduce emissions, they should also live green in
their daily lives.

 The 4 Key Skills of an HVAC Engineer
In order for HVAC engineers to become successful in what they do, they have to
possess certain skills. There are only four.

Without the integration of heating, ventilation, and
air conditioning (HVAC) products and systems in
a building, it is extremely difficult to keep safe and
healthy conditions for the people using that facility.
It is this aspect of building design which ensures
the overall indoor temperature, humidity, and air
quality.
But who are in-charge of this kind of technology?
The HVAC engineers.
HVAC engineers are typically mechanical engineers
who give greater focus on HVAC systems. They
usually work for HVAC suppliers or contractors,
wherein they design, install, maintain, and repair
products and systems. Much of their work caters
to the HVAC needs of residential, industrial,
institutional, and commercial buildings, including
schools, office buildings, and health care facilities.
Their primary role is to provide thermal comfort and
acceptable indoor quality using different products
and systems for HVAC. Using their knowledge
in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat
transfer, HVAC engineers design new systems and
find solutions for existing system problems.
In order for HVAC engineers to become successful
in what they do, they have to possess certain skills.
There are four: problem solving, computer-
aided drafting, strong attention to detail, and
communication skills.
Problem Solving
HVAC engineers have to meet the basic
requirement for them to be called engineers
having the ability to solve problems using technical
knowledge. In their case, they are bound to think

critically in making products and systems for
HVAC work optimally in buildings. This skill
is learned in engineering school and further
enhanced through trainings and field work.
Problem solving should be inherent to HVAC
engineers not only in terms of theory but also in
practice. Computer-aided Design Products and
systems for HVAC today are heavily dependent
on the use of computer-aided design. For that,
HVAC engineers are required to be proficient with
the design software used in the industry, enabling
them to translate their solutions to real-life
applications in the most effective way possible.
Strong Attention to Detail
One minor mistake with products for HVAC that
was overlooked can lead to a disaster.
In installation, for example, one duct that was
wrongly installed which was failed to inspect
can have serious repercussions later during
building operations. In the design aspect, a small
miscalculation could drastically shorten an HVAC
equipments service life.
Moreover, having a strong attention to detail
also applies when HVAC engineers perform cost
estimation. Part of the job is to prepare estimates
particularly those involved in sales.
Communication Skills
Like in any organization which requires its
employees to collaborate, HVAC engineers have
to communicate effectively. Because the entire job
cannot be done alone.
Above that, they also work with clients and

systems for HVAC and make the necessary

 How to Prevent Frost
in Refrigerant Lines: HVACR Tips
Doing these preventive measures could save anyone from experiencing
a hot summer day with a broken AC due to frozen refrigerant lines.
There is no engineered product or system that
is perfectly designed to the point that they do
not need repairs or fixes. In the HVACR & MEP
industry, there are several, especially in the air
conditioning part.
One of the most common problems in air
conditioning systems is the formation of frost in
the refrigerant lines, which leads to loss of cooling.
Especially if it happens in a location where the
weather is sweltering, the situation can really get
into the nerves.
But not when one knows how to prevent it.
For starters, the refrigerant lines are
the two copper lines that connect
the outdoor air conditioner or
heat pump to the indoor
evaporator coil. This is
visible and not enclosed
to the system, so one
could see if the
refrigerant lines,
in any of its
external
parts, get
frozen.
To be able to prevent it, the reasons why this
phenomenon happens should be identified first.
There are essentially four:
Blocked air flow.
This happens when there is restrictive air flow
through the cooling coil, caused by either a dirty
air filter, collapsed duct insulation, or a crimped
flex-duct, among others. Heat exchange cannot
take place when the air conditioning system is not
properly blowing inside air over the evaporator
coil, which, over time, can cause the freeze up.
Improper refrigerant charge.
The air conditioning system, including its
refrigerant lines, can freeze if it runs low on
refrigerant due to lower pressure inside the
system itself or the fluid is improperly charged.
When parts rub together or vibrate over time,
leaks, especially in loose fittings and shoulder
joints, could also cause refrigerant problems.
Malfunctioning refrigerant
metering device.
One such device is the thermal expansion valve,
which, when not working properly, could lead
to ice formation in the refrigerant lines due to
misreading.
Bad defrost timer control.
When defrosting cannot be controlled due
to a malfunctioning auto-defrost system,
icing in the refrigerant lines could
form.
While the last two cannot be prevented since
components have a limited service life, there is
something that can be done to prevent the first
two from forming frost in the refrigerant lines.
The simplest, most cost-effective way to ensure
the refrigerant lines do not freeze is to change
the air filters regularly, usually about every
three months or so. Once the evaporator coils
are seen to be dirty, it needs to be cleaned
by a professional to ensure that all the dust is
vacuumed out, allowing smooth air flow.

Such is a technique which is common sense.
But it is worth mentioning that below the
mentioned temperature, the pressures inside
the air conditioner could drop, which can cause
a freeze up. Plus it would not only prevent
the HVACR system from freezing, it saves the
owner energy and money on utility costs by just
opening the windows.

It is also recommended that the owners should

not close supply vents, or the ones that blow air
out, even in unused rooms as doing this reduces
airflow over the evaporator coil.

When it comes to the HVAC refrigerant charge,

it takes a technician to test the air conditioning
system for potential problems like leaks,
weakened parts, and insufficient coolant. The
owner does not have to worry about the icing
in the refrigerant lines if the testing is done
regularly.

such as its multi-split air conditioners for buildings.
As one of the largest markets in the region of
Asia and Oceania, the air conditioning market
in Australia totals approximately 270 billion yen
in equipment sales and sales for services and
solutions. Of this, services and solutions are
estimated to account for roughly half of the total.

strategic management plan aiming for 2020.
With this acquisition, Daikin intends to establish
a business model for its service and solutions
business in Australia that can be expanded to Asia

ASHRAE:
Extending Our
Global Community

My name is Bjarne Olesen and I am the 2017-2018

ASHRAE President. How did I become president
for such an influential organization?
Great question.

I come from Denmark, which is a small

country in Scandinavia. My first contact with
ASHRAE was through the Handbooks and
ASHRAE Transactions, which were regarded
as high-level scientific publications among
researchers. During my Masters and Ph.D.
studies, I met several influential ASHRAE
members, including Ralph Nevins, leader of
the ASHRAE research lab at Kansas State
University, and Pharoe Gagge from the
John B. Pierce Lab at Yale University who,
for many years, were both regarded as the
leading researchers in thermal comfort.

So, it was no surprise that my mentor

Professor Ole Fanger asked me to attend
the ASHRAE annual meeting in Halifax in
the summer of 1977 to present a paper
based on my Ph.D. study. Since then, I
have been to every meeting and now have
the pleasure of serving as the Societys
president.

Extending our Community

Although ASHRAEs global presence has grown,
we need to be more strategic as a leader, in some
cases as a partner, and in other cases as both.
That is why my presidential theme is Extending our
Global Community.

The world is getting smaller and ASHRAE is

getting bigger. The work of ASHRAE members
is not constrained by borders. We are a global,
inclusive community united by a common
passion to optimize the design and performance
of buildings. Is it possible to be global without
speaking the same language and without using
the same units of measure? The answer is yes.
ASHRAE has approximately 56,000 members
with 20 percent located outside of North America,
representing more than 130 countries. We
have more than 180 chapters and 269 student
branches. Our membership growth is steady in
both North America and in Europe, but we also
have solid growth in Asia and the Middle East.
Forty-two of ASHRAEs 44 Chapters chartered
since 1990 have been formed outside of North
America.

We only have two regions that are entirely outside

North America: Region XIII that encompasses
East and Southern Asia, and Region at Large
(RAL) which encompasses Europe, the Middle
East and parts of Asia (India, Pakistan, etc.).
Europe is challenged as most of the 1,800
members do not have the benefits of a local
Chapter.

To better serve ASHRAE European members and

to improve the influence of ASHRAE members in
Europe, ASHRAE has created a new European
region, Region XIV.

This new region will strengthen the grassroots

Chapter and Regional infrastructure, a strategy
that has proven successful around the globe.
With this new region will also come new chapters
in Ireland and UK, which will be vitally important
for collaboration.

Working together with the individual national

HVAC&R Societies throughout Europe is critically
important. To help drive these relationships,
ASHRAE has recently announced new
strategic partnership agreements with CIBSE
(the Chartered Institute of Building Services
Engineers), which is based in the UK, and REHVA
(the Federation of European Heating, Ventilation
and Air-Conditioning associations). REHVA is a
federation of 26 European HVACR Societies with
more than 100,000 members. These agreements
will increase the knowledge transfer both ways
between North America and Europe.
ASHRAE history has proven that the impact of
creating a new region can be very significant.
Take Region XIII, for example, which covers

 Eastern and Southern Asia. When it started,
there were only four chapters. Now there are 10.
Developing Economies
ASHRAEs mission statement states that we will
advance the arts and sciences of HVAC&R to
serve humanity and create a more sustainable
world. Working in developing economies is one
of ASHRAEs greatest opportunities to serve
humanity to make lives better.
More than 3.565 billion people live in low
income and lower middle-income countries
with developing economies, according to The
World Bank. ASHRAE has approximately 3,500
members in these areas. There are serious
problems in many of these countries. According
to the World Health Organization, more than
5,000 people die every day in developing
economies due to exposure to bad indoor air
quality. This is primarily women and children
exposed to particles and chemicals from un-
vented cooking and fireplaces.
What can ASHRAE do?
We need to build upon the strong relationship
we have with the United Nations Environmental
Program (UNEP) to help people in developing
economies. We have recently signed a new work

plan with UNEP focusing on education related
to conventional and low-GWP (global warning
potential) refrigerants. We need to determine
if there are technologies and educational
opportunities ASHRAE can provide to improve
the living conditions for people in an energy-
efficient and affordable manner.
Extending our global community does not mean
ASHRAE is changing course. It means we are
building on our strategic plan, acknowledging
our interconnectedness worldwide and
embracing our shared needs and objectives.
This is something that will benefit all of us. The
technical guidance we produce for all members
is made stronger by global diversity.
We will also extend our technological tools
and knowledge to address needs in residential
buildings and in developing economies. This will
help us continue Extending ASHRAEs scope
beyond traditional commercial buildings as we
develop standards, conduct research and further
our outreach to broader communities and needs.
Residential
Many believe ASHRAE only addresses issues
related to commercial buildings. But, in fact,
ASHRAE has long been a participant in critical
aspects of residential building performance, from
fundamentals on heat transfer and equipment
sizing to human comfort. We have technological
offerings such as ASHRAE Standard 62.2
addressing the indoor air quality needs in
homes, and a renewed effort on ASHRAE
Standard 90.2 which addresses residential
building energy use.
People spend more than 50 percent of their
time in homes, and as energy use in residential
buildings is greater than in commercial buildings,
ASHRAE is increasing our activities to serve the
residential marketplace.
The first step was forming a committee under
the Technology Council the Residential
Buildings Committee which will oversee
Extending ASHRAEs presence. Several
initiatives are already underway. We are
working to establish an ASHRAE conference
with a robust residential focus. Our Green
Guide publication has been revised to include
specific content related to residential buildings.
Additionally, the development of the first
residential building design guide focusing on
multi-family buildings is underway.
New Training Center
Lastly, as part of this commitment to Extend the
Societys global reach and better support our
membership, we are establishing the ASHRAE
Global Training Center for Building Excellence
in Dubai to serve ASHRAE members and other
building system professionals in the Gulf Region
and in surrounding areas.
The focus of the ASHRAE Global Training Center
will be to make training conveniently available
on a regular schedule that is curricula based.
Training offered in the center will be customized
and scalable, accounting for climate, culture,
suppliers, energy sources, prices, codes and
construction practices. The centers instructors
will be engineers familiar with the intricacies of
the Middle East.
This will be an exciting and challenging year
for ASHRAE as we work on Extending our
Community.
However, with the help of our industry leaders
and volunteers who devote many hours of their
time, we will continue working tirelessly to create
a more sustainable built environment around the
world.

Olesen has previously served on the Board
of Directors as Treasurer, Vice President and
Director-at-Large.
In Olesens theme, Extending our Community,
he focuses his theme on three directives:
extend our global community; extend our
technological horizons; and extend our value to
members.
Extending our global community will
acknowledge our interconnectedness
worldwide and embrace our shared needs
and objectives, Olesen said. The technical
guidance we produce for all members is made
stronger by global diversity.
Through the start of Olesens time with
ASHRAE, he did not have the opportunity to
get involved with a local chapter to dedicate
his time and efforts to the HVAC industry and
believes in the importance of working together
to create a better built environment.
Many of our members are only active on one
side either the technical side, mainly at the
Society level, or the grassroots side at the local
chapter level, Olesen said. However, one
side cannot live without the other. We will work
to extend our global connections and more
strongly link our members worldwide. Doing so
will strengthen our Societys knowledge base,
community reach and ability to shape a more
sustainable world.
Olesen is the Director of the International
Center for Indoor Environment and Energy and
a Professor at Danish Technical University.
In addition to his time served on the Board
of Directors, Olesen has been a part of
many technical committees and been a
Coordinating Officer of various committees,
most recently: Conferences and Expositions
Committee, Chapter Technology Transfer
Committee, Honors and Awards Committee,
Grassroots Government Advocacy Committee,
Membership Promotion Committee, Research
Promotion Committee, Student Activities
Committee and Young Engineers in ASHRAE
Committee.
For his efforts and dedication to ASHRAE,
Olesen is the recipient of the Lou Flagg
Historical Award, Fellow Award, Exceptional
Service Award and Distinguished Service
Award.
Olesen earned his Ph.D. in Heating and Air
Conditioning in 1975 and Master of Science
in Civil Engineering in 1972 both degrees
obtained from the Technical University of
Denmark.

Panasonic has announced that it is now
delivering the AW-HR140 outdoor integrated
pan/tilt/zoom FHD remote camera, which is
enclosed in an IP65 protected case eliminating
the need for a separate housing. Primary
applications for this SDI-output camera are
for outdoor live events and sports arenas and
stadiums, as well as for broadcast coverage of
weather, traffic and scenics.
Equipped with 1/2.86-type full HD 3MOS
sensors, the camera realizes high sensitivity

Frosting, icing and condensation are
prevented by heating in environments as cold
as -5 F. Even in blizzards, snow that hits the

Moreover, all functions are guaranteed to
operate in wind speeds of up to 15 m/s, and
basic performance is maintained at wind
speeds of up to 50 m/s without destruction
of the camera. A lens wiper, which can be
con-trolled remotely, keeps the lens clear
even when the camera is being used in harsh
environments.
In addition to stabilization by conventional
optical image stabilization (OIS) technology,

vibration compensation provided by the newly-
developed Dynamic Image Stabilizing System

The HR140 likewise incorporates haze-
reduction technology--beneficial for outdoor
environments such as weather reporting--for
ensuring optimal image reproduction. In cer-
tain situations, picture contrast may be low as
result of environmental fog or haze conditions,
and the Haze Reduction function will optimize
camera image settings appropriately to assure
that the subject of shooting is as clear as
possible.
Output formats include 1080/59.94p,
1080/29.97p, 1080/23.98p, 1080/59.94i,
1080/29.97PsF, 1080/23.98PsF, 720/59.94p,
1080/50p, 1080/25p, 1080/50i, 1080/25PsF
and 720/50p. Additional features include three
Auto Tracking White Balance (ATW) modes
(slow/normal/fast), PoE++ sup-port for lower
installation costs, Dynamic Range Stretch
(DRS), Hybrid Digital Noise Reduction, a Night
Mode for infrared shooting, a Freeze During
Preset function, and comprehensive Intelligent
Functions (ATW, Automatic Gain Control, Auto
Iris Control, Auto Digital Shutter, Auto ND
Filter).
Using an IP browser, such as Internet Explorer
or Safari, it is possible to set up and control
the HR140 from a remote location. IP video
monitoring and remote camera control can
also be per-formed from mobile terminals
such as an iPhone, iPad or Android devices.
Furthermore, the cam-era features a powerful
internal audio/video encoder that can stream
up to seven channels of video at different
resolutions, bitrates and framerates. For this
reason, there is no need for the separate
encoder normally required when streaming
video and audio via IP.
Using an IP connection, up to 100 HR140
cameras can be controlled by a single AW-
RP120G, AW-RP50, or PC via a network. One
camera can also be operated by up to five
remote camera controllers (AW-RP120Gs or
AW-RP50s) via IP. The camera can also be
powered by PoE++ (Power over Ethernet)
enabling single cable connectivity to the
camera for power, audio, video, and control.
Thanks to a highly evolved pan-tilt design, the
HR140 achieves smoother and more natural
move-ment during on-air shots. The pan-tilt
head also has a wide shooting range, with a
pan range of 175 and a tilt range of -30
to 210 . The newly developed pan-tilt drive
provides high-speed operation at maximum
60 /s, excellent response to remote control
operation, and highly precise stop control.
These features combine to accurately capture
fast-action sports scenes or smooth concert
footage. The camera also achieves the low
noise level during operation, at NC45 or less at
a pan-tilt speed of 60/s.
The AW-HR140 is immediately available at a
suggested list price of $17,950.00.
