Kim, K. M. (2013). Do They Need to Wait Until They Get Ready? Learning a Second
Language through Writing. Asian EFL Journal, 15(3): 138 -160.

In this article, Kim proposed that the idea that w riting skill is too difficult to second
language (L2) learners before they master speaking and reading skills is not entirely true
or can be distorted. This study focuses on the writing as a platform to promote the
process of L2 learning that should be com bined with other skills (such as oral mode) to
arrive into a better way of learning L2. The author suggests that a further empirical study
that involves a specific group of people as the object of the study needs to be undertaken
to understand the potential role of the writing thoroughly in the development of L2
learning.

Nation, P. (2003). The role of the first language in foreign language learning. Asian
EFL Journal, 5(2), 1-8.

The article written by Nation explored the potential role of the first langua ge (L1), which
is small but salient, in foreign language learning (FLL). Nation investigated the function
of L1 into FLL by analyzing several of previous studies findings that explore how L1 works
into FLL process. Nation suggests that in the future, an e mpirical research is necessary
to be conducted to support the findings of the article. This research will not form the
basis of my study, but relevant as a supplementary for my investigation on the role of
Indonesian in learning English, especially in writ ing activity.

Farahzad, F., & Emam, A. (2010). Reading -writing connections in EAP courses:
implications and applications. Journal of Language Teaching and Research, 1(5),
596-604.

The research aimed to pinpoint distinctive features of each skills, and expl ore further
the implication and the application of the skills in EAP courses. The focus of the study is
to describe the connection between reading and writing which often linked that the
former often precedes the latter. Farahzad and Emam suggest that futu re empirical
studies are required so that the specific case can be focused such as a comparison and
contrast between performance of English and non -English groups in terms of reading
and writing connections. This study will not act as the bases of my stu dy, but perform as
a supplementary information for my research on EFL writing as the impact of
participants previous reading.
