0 Mr Ramnath Kovind has taken over as 14th President of India.

He was administered the


oath of office by Chief Justice of India Justice JS Khehar at a special function in the
Central hall of Parliament this afternoon. After the swearing-in, he was given 21-gun
salute.

1 Renowned scientist Professor Yash Pal passed away last night at his residence in Noida,
in Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh. He was 90. According to family sources, he
will be cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium in New Delhi this afternoon.

2 Google parent Alphabet has reported a quarterly profit of USD 3.5 billion, with a massive
fine by the European Commission biting into earnings.

3 The Madras High Court today made singing of the national song Vande Mataram
mandatory in schools across Tamil Nadu, at least twice a week.

5 The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 have been amended vide GSR
629 (E) dated 23rd June, 2017. The said amendment will come into force w.e.f. 1st
January, 2018 to enhance consumer protection and for requirement of ease of doing
business. The salient features of the said amendment are:
-Goods displayed by the seller on-ecommerce platform shall contain declarations
required under the rules.
-Specific mention is made in the rules that no person shall declare different MRPs (dual
MRP) on an identical pre-packaged commodity. -Size
of letters and numerals for making declaration is increased, so that consumer can easily
read the same.
-The net quantity checking is made more scientific.
-Bar Code/QR Coding are allowed on voluntarily basis.
-Provisions regarding declarations on Food Products have been harmonized with
regulation under the Food Safety & Standards Act.
-Medical devices which are declared as drugs are brought into the purview of
declarations to be made under the rules.

6 The Foundation Day of Ministry of Earth Sciences is celebrated on 27th July every year.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is mandated to provide the nation with the best
possible services in forecasting the monsoons and other weather/climate parameters,
ocean state, earthquakes, tsunamis and other phenomena related to earth systems, for
the Public Safety and socio-economic benefits.

7 India skipper Mithali Raj was today chosen as the captain of the ICC Women's World Cup
2017 team by the International Cricket Council. The 34-year-old Indian was selected
after she led India to the final of the just-concluded ICC Women's World Cup.
