Chapter 2

METHOD

The methods used in gathering and analyzing is presented in this part.

These methods include the research design, research subject, research instrument,

data gathering procedure and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive-correlation method of research. It described

the level of war on drugs in the Philippines in terms of oplan tokhang,

rehabilitaion for drug users and workplace drug testing. Perception of criminology

students on war on drugs is described in terms of: oplan tokhang, rehabilitaion for

drug users and workplace drug testing, were also described. The significant

relationship between war on drugs and perception of criminology students on war

on drugs was also discussed.

Research Subjects

The study was undertaken at University of Mindanao Bansalan College.

The selected criminology students in University of Mindanao Bansalan College

chosen as respondents of this study. There are 50 or 50% male and 50 or 50%

female with a total of 100 or 100%. Table 1 shows the distribution of responents.

Research Instrument

The data was gathered through the use of a survey questionnaire distributed

by the researchers. The questionnaires were composed of three parts. Part I dealt

on the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age and sex. Part II is

the war on drugs in the Philippines in terms of oplan tokhang, rehabilitaion for

drug users and workplace drug testing. Part III is about the perception of

criminology students in University of Mindanao Bansalan College about war on

drugs in terms of oplan tokhang, rehabilitaion for drug users and workplace drug

testing.

In describing the level of the war on drugs in the Philippines, a 5-point

likert scale was used as presented below:

Numerical Range of Verbal Description

Value Mean Description

5 4.20-5.00 Very high The measure described in the

item is manifested at all
times.

4 3.40-4.29 High The measure described in the

item is manifested in majority
of the cases.

3 2.60-3.39 Moderate The measure described in the

item is manifested in many
but not majority of the cases.

2 1.80-2.59 Low The measure described in the

item is manifested in few
instances.

1 1.00-1.79 Very Low The measure described in the

item is not manifested at all.
The levels of perception of criminology students in University of

Mindanao Bansalan College about war on drugs were also interpreted and

described as presented below;

Numerical Range of Verbal Description

Value Mean Description

5 4.21-5.00 Very High This means that the

perception of criminology
students on war on drugs is
very highly satisfied.

4 3.41-4.19 High This means that the

perception of criminology
students on war on drugs is
highly satisfied.

3 2.61-3.39 Moderate This means that the

perception of criminology
students on war on drugs is
somewhat satisfied.

perception of criminology
students on war on drugs is
satisfied.
1 1.00-1.79 Very Low
This means that the
perception of criminology
students on war on drugs is
not satisfied at all.

Data Gathering Procedures

The following steps were undertaken during the gathering of data:

1. Formulation of Instrument. The researcher gathered questions that are

suite to war on drugs in the Philippines and the perception of criminology students

in University of Mindanao Bansalan College. The gathered questions were

modified and improved by the researchers for the respondents to understand

easily.

2. Seeking Permission to Conduct Study. The researchers secured a

letter of permission from the College of Directors Office to permit the former to

conduct a research. This is noted and recommended by the Business of

Criminology.

3. Distribution of Questionnaire. The researcher distributed the

questionnaire themselves to the students who served as the respondents. The

researchers explained and translated each question to the respondents for them to

understand it easily.

4. Retrieval of the Research Instrument. The researchers facilitated and

retrieved the questionnaire themselves.

5. Collection and Processing. The researchers evaluated all the data and

were encoded to Microsoft Excel Software and then submitted to the statistician

for statistical treatment.

Statistical Treatment of Data

After gathering the data needed, the statistician was consulted for the

distribution for the tabulation and transmulation of the data. Only mean/median

was used in determining the value of each data gathered..

Frequency. This tool was used to describe the number of the respondents

used in the survey.

Percentage. This was used to determine the relationship of the individual

data with respect to the whole number of respondents in the study.

Mean. This was used in determining the level of war on drugs in the

Philippines and the perception of criminology students in University of Mindanao

Bansalan College.

Pearson r. This was used to determine the relationship of the war on drugs

in the Philippines and the perception of criminology students in University
