OCEAN ACTIVITIES

Hands on!
This is a package with activities to help you learn about how the ocean works, the
organisms that live in it, and just how important it is in our everyday lives. You will also
discover how you can play a role in protecting our ocean for future generations.

You must complete four compulsory activities and at least 2 additional, optional activities.
After completing activities successfully, you will earn the Ocean Badge or a sticker . A
checklist helps you to keep track of the activities you have completed.

Compulsory activities ensure that you understand basic concepts and issues related to
the ocean. Optional activities are activities which you are interested in and you can
choose which activities you want to do.

Activity: Watch a video about ocean for

3. Topic: Organisms in seawater.
Activity: Examine seawater and make
photo collage. Use magnifying glass or
microscope. Take a picture and make

Give organisms name, classify them and
write something interesting about their
lives. Use suitable hashtags for example

4. Topic: Problems of oceans and solutions
Activity: Find out about problems of
oceans and the means of protection.
Make a concept map. After that create a
short (1-2 minutes) advertisement about
the problems and means of protections.

Activity: Find a good picture about

Activity: Go out on the shore. Observe

report summarizing your findings and add

Activity: Make trading cards of organisms
in oceans. Write down common name,
scientific name, classification, position in

Activity: Carry out fish dissection with small
groups and teacher. Take photos and
write report of your findings or make a

human inventions
Activity: Compare different animals such
as coral, zooplankton, flying fish, tuna,
sharks, seals, orcas, sea horses, manatees,
jellyfish and sea stars. What are some of

human inventions that copy sea animal
movement? Make a poster, flyer or
infographic about adaptations.

10. Topic: Photosynthesis
Activity: Watch a video about The
Photosynthesis Song. Why photosynthesis
is so important for life of oceans? Make
your own song about photosynthesis and
record it.

Activity: Life began in oceans. Explore the
evolution of life and make a timeline of
evolution.

12. Topic: Marine food chain
Activity: Make a marine food chain
mobile. Use pictures or drawings of marine
organisms to create a marine food
chain mobile or create organisms about
modelling clay. Make a frame an old
coat hanger. Start by attaching a top-
level carnivore like a shark, then use string
to attach the next level of the food
chain (e.g. carnivorous fish),
then herbivores, then plants and so on.
13. Topic: Plastic in oceans
Activity: Watch a video Plastic debris in
the oceans. Write down how plastic
effect on organisms and what you can
do to minimize plastic debris. Make a
crossword puzzle about plastic in the
oceans.

14. Topic: Sustainable living
Activity: Design and make your own
shopping bag from old clothing or items.
15. Topic: Local ocean
Activity: Find out as much as you can
about your local ocean. Interview marine
biologists or other people who know
about the ocean. Put together a quiz for
the rest of your group and compare your
findings by answering each others
questions.

16. Topic: News about oceans
Activity: Follow media and news about
oceans. Get a newspaper and read all
articles about oceans. Or visit
a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or
Pinterest and start follow people or groups
who share information about oceans. Join
and contribute with them. Pick up
contents that interests you and build your
own magazine of oceans.

17. Topic: Oceans
Activity: Find from internet ocean-themed
games and play them or create your own
marine life game.
18. Topic: Humans effects on oceans
Activity: Create a short film, photo-story,
play or podcast explaining how humans
affect the ocean and coastline near you
and how this in turn affects the local
community. Try to reach your audience.
You could try to get the local media
involved.

19. Topic: Interesting marine organism
Activity: Find out about one marine
organism that interests you. How big is it?
Where does it live? What does it eat and
what eats it? How long does it live? Do
people use it in some way? Make a
presentation about it.

20. Topic: Weird organisms
Activity: Find a species that you have
never heard of before and bring it to life
using any craft method you like. Why this
creature is important and what problems
might be caused if it became extinct?

21. Topic: Food from oceans
Activity: Record what you eat for two
days. Which animals and plants did your
food come from? Which of those are
organisms that live in oceans? Write
notes.

22. Topic: Threatened species
Activity: Make a commercial about a
threatened species in the ocean.
Discover what does it eat, what animals
eat it, what are its habits, why is it
threatened with extinction, who is
responsible for that and what the
environment would be like if that species
goes extinct? How consumer choices
affect them directly and indirectly.
Record it for example with something and
post it on YouTube or Facebook. Monitor
the number of hits (the number of people
who watch your commercial) and the
comments on the website. Make sure you
have the permission of the pictures or
everyone in the video and their parents
before you post it.

23. Topic: Beach clean-up
Activity: Organize a beach clean-up.
Inform for it in Facebook or Instagram. Use
suitable hashtags. Be careful of
sharp or toxic items. Use appropriate
protective equipment such as gloves. Try
to collect as much rubbish as you can
find. Once you have finished, put all the
rubbish together in a big pile. Invite your
friends and parents to see the results of
your work. You could also get the media
involved. Invite a local journalist or radio
presenter to join your beach clean. If no
one is available, write a report about the
event for the local newspaper.
