My philosophy of music education was probably one of the most difficult and challenging papers
that I have ever had to write. However, although it was challenging, it was also one of the most
rewarding writing experiences that I have had. Writing this paper has helped me to refine and enhance
my ability to express the value and importance of music, and describe the reasons that music should be
In order to write this paper, I needed to think about and investigate the value of music to human
life. I researched and read several documents and philosophies of music education. I also reviewed my
prior knowledge of educational policies and standards such as the National Core Arts Standards, and
combined it with the new information that I was learning in class (Piaget, Herbart). I also considered
my past musical experiences, and my personal relationship with music. Then, I synthesized all of this
information in order to create an organized and powerful philosophy that best represents my beliefs
(Gestalt).
The process of synthesizing and organizing my thoughts was difficult. I found it very challenging
to clearly articulate my thoughts in an organized way that flowed as a cohesive paper instead of a list of
ideas. It is difficult to clearly articulate the meaning and value of music because its power goes beyond
words. However, after gathering ideas, outlining, drafting, writing, and editing my philosophy, I feel
more comfortable expressing the value of music to others. I am able to more clearly articulate the main
reasons that I think music is important. This will help me be able to better advocate for music programs.
Finally, the process of creating this philosophy has also given me a foundation for a working
document that will continue to evolve as I grow and learn as a teacher (Dweck, Maslow). It will provide
me with guiding principles that will help me keep the value and importance of music at the center of my
teaching.
