Communicating Through Tables and Graphs

Presenting or reporting ones observation is made easier and much more understood when one uses graph. A graph is a
pictorial device, like a pie or bar graph, used to illustrate quantitative relationship.

Steps in Making a Graph

1. Write the data in a chart.

Title of the graph
Number of Latecomers for June 2016 at Rosevale School
Weeks Number of Latecomers
x-column title
1st week 10 y-column title
2nd week 15
3rd week 20
x-column variable y-column variable
4th week 25

2. Draw a pair of perpendicular lines. The horizontal line is your x-axis, label it as Week. The vertical line is your y-
axis, label it as the Number of Latecomers
3. Plot the points in the Cartesian coordinate system.
4. Connect the dots.

Types of Graphs

1. Line graph- It uses a line to connect the data points that you plot. It is useful in predicting future events.
2. Bar graph- It shows relationship between data series. The height represents the measured value or frequency.
3. A pie chart compares parts to whole. It shows a percentage distribution
4. A pictograph uses picture symbols to represent numerical data.

Let us reverse the process. Instead of plotting the variable of a chart in graph, write the variable in the chart or table.
