Lesson Title: Supporting Teachers through Effective Professional Development

Objective To analyze the characteristics effective professional development and


develop essential elements of school professional development.

Duration 60 Minutes

Materials/Equipment PDF PowerPoint (PPT) Slideshow, computer, projector or TV, post-it easel
Needed pad, Post-it notes, pens, timer. Teachers will need to bring their own
computers.

Special note: Write Positive PD Experience and Negative PD Experience on


two post-it easel pad paper separately. Post the paper on two corners of the
room prior to the presentation. This will be used in Activity 1.

Procedures Show PPT Page 1 and greet teacher attendees as they enter the room.
1 minute: Show PPT Page 2: Read out loud the learning objective to
the teachers.
3 minutes (PPT Page 3): Opening Quote. Discuss the importance of
effective professional development can ultimately lead to improve
student learning. This is why this presentation is happening.
10 minutes (PPT Page 4): Show Activity 1.
3 minutes: Present teachers with the activity procedure. Read
the procedures out loud.
5 minutes (PPT page 5): Once 5 minute time is up, ask
teachers to return to their seats and ask a few teachers to share
their reactions about their own words or after reading others
words. Comment on both positive and negative experiences.
Bring the conversation to the learning objective. We are here
to analyze and develop essential elements of school
professional development.
3 minutes (PPT page 6): Show teachers how they can be supported
through effective professional development. Call one teacher to read
out loud the paragraph.
10 minutes (PPT Page 7): Video Viewing Activity (Stop the video at
2 minutes 30 seconds)
2 minutes: Show directions of analyzing effective professional
development activity.
1. While watching the video, please take notes of the
characteristics of effective professional development.
2. After the video, you will share your notes with an elbow
partner.
3 minutes: Click the hyperlink of the viewing activity on page
5 and begin playing the video. Stop the video at 2 minutes
30 seconds.
3 minutes: Ask teachers to turn to an elbow partner, share and
discuss each others notes.
2 minutes: Ask several teachers to share their group
discussions.
30 minutes (PPT page 8): Show Activity 2.
3 minutes: Present teachers with the activity procedure. Read
the procedures out loud.
20 minutes activity time. Presenter should share his/her email
address with the group.
7 minutes (PPT Page 9): Call one member from each group to
present their essential elements. Presenter should also show
each document as each group presents.
3 minutes (PPT Pages 10-11)Wrap-up & Show reference page
(PPT Page 10). Ask teachers if they have any feedback,
questions or concerns about effective professional
development at this time.
