LEED 2009: SELECTION
How to decide???
Use the 40-60 rule

a) If a particular rating system is

appropriate for 40% or less of a LEED
project building or space, then that
rating system should not be used.
b) If a particular rating system is
appropriate for 60% or more of a
LEED project building or space, then
that rating system should be used.
c) Project teams with buildings and
spaces that do not fall into the
scenarios described in a) and b) must
independently assess their situation and
decide which rating system is most
applicable.

Sustainable Sites

Liza Morales-Crespo, AIA, LEED AP, UAP

SS(P1): Const. Activity Pollution Prevention
Implementation:
Provide ESC (Erosion and Sedimentation Control)
plan into construction documents and specifications.
Goal is to prevent the loss of soil, pollution, and
sedimentation.
Follow the EPA 2003 (Environmental Protection
Agency) standards.
CGP (Construction General Permit) outlines how to
comply with NPDES program. CGP covers sites
greater than 1 acre, but LEED covers all.
Ways to control sedimentation:
Stabilization: i.e. seeding and mulching
Structural: i.e. silt fences, earth dikes,
sediment traps

SS: Alt. Trans.- Alternative Transportation

Bicycle Racks and Shower Facilities

Alternative transportation parking, vans and hybrids

Liza Morales-Crespo, AIA, LEED AP, UAP
SS: Stormwater Quantity Control

Implementation:
case 1: impervious surface less than or equal to
50% of total site area
post-development peak discharge rate
and quantity equal to or less than pre-
development (for 1 and 2 year, 24-hour
design storms) OR
implement a stormwater management plan
that protect receiving stream channels from
excessive erosion by implementing a stream
channel protection strategy and quantity
control strategies.

Liza Morales-Crespo, AIA, LEED AP, UAP

SS: Stormwater Quantity Control

case 2: impervious surface more than 50%

of total site area
post-development peak discharge
rate and quantity 25% less than pre-
development (from the two-year 24-
hour design storm)

Liza Morales-Crespo, AIA, LEED AP, UAP

SS: Stormwater Quantity Control

Liza Morales-Crespo, AIA, LEED AP, UAP

SS: Stormwater Quality Control

Implementation:
treat and capture 90% storm water runoff

remove 80% TSS (total suspended solids)

use acceptable BMPs (Best Management Practices) considering the

following:
sustainable design strategies: low impact, environmentally sensitive
design)
alternative surfaces: vegetated roofs, swales
natural and mechanical treatment: constructed wetlands, vegetated
filters and open channels

MR: Recycled Content
Pre-consumer recycled content: is the percentage of materials in a product that is recycled from
manufacturing waste. Examples include planer shavings, sawdust, bagasse, walnut shells, culls,
trimmed materials, over issue publications, and obsolete inventories. Scrap items capable of being
reclaimed within the same process that generated them are not eligible.

Postconsumer materials: waste materials generated by households or by commercial, industrial and

institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product, which can no longer be used for its
intended purpose.

Equation 1:
Recycled Content Value ($) = (% Postconsumer Recycled Content x
Materials Cost) + 0.5(% Preconsumer Recycled Content x Materials
Cost)

Liza Morales-Crespo, AIA, LEED AP, UAP

MR: Recycled Content

Steel is the only material for which LEED allows you to claim a default
recycled-content value (25% post-consumer)
