Task 2: Design of a Natural Gas Network

Submission on 03-08-2017 at 2 PM
Groups: As announced for Task-2

Submit a brief report on your work and be ready to demonstrate your calculations on the
same day. The report must carry roll numbers and names of only those who have actively
participated in accomplishing the task. Each team member must sign against her/his name as
an affirmation that she/he has indeed contributed and can explain everything that is submitted
if asked to do so.

A City Gas Distribution (CGD) Company buys natural gas from a cross-country pipeline
transporter at the city gate station (CGS). It then mixes it with an odorizer in trace quantities
and transports it through its pipeline network to three categories of consumers, namely,
industrial, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) stations for vehicular purposes and domestic
users as piped cooking gas. Specifications of their simplified network from CGS to these
three user categories are as follows.

Gas receipt at custody transfer meter at CGS is at 35 bar pressure. The gas then travels
through a header of 18", Schedule 60 pipeline to a Tap-off Point (ToP) with chainage
(4000+100i) metres. A branch pipe from ToP supplies (60000-1000i) SCMH (Standard
Cubic Metres per Hour) to an industrial user through a 8", Schedule 60 pipe of length 5 km.
The remaining gas proceeds through the header pipeline to the next ToP where (12000-100i)
SCMH of gas travels (30000+1000i) m through a branch pipeline of 8", Schedule 60 pipe to a
Compressor station for CNG. The remaining gas travels through a 6", Schedule 60 pipeline of
length 4 km to a Pressure Reducing Station (PRS) where the pressure is reduced to 18 bar for
further travel in a 8", Schedule 40 pipe of length 2 km. The pressure at this PRS is reduced
further to 4 bar and the gas supplied to the domestic user distribution network at
(25000+5000i) SCMH at the end of a (5000-100i) m lubricated HDPE pipeline of 10" OD
and 20 mm thickness. 'i' is your group number. For example, i = 7 if your group is G7.

All pipe sections except the HDPE section are of MS and the surface roughness can be taken
as 0.05 mm. Surface roughness of lubricated HDPE pipe can be taken as 10 microns.

The NG composition in mol % is as follows:

Methane: 92 %
Ethane: 4%
Propane: 1%
Butane: 1%
Carbon dioxide: 2 %

NG does not behave as an ideal gas over the entire pressure range. The compressibility factor
of the gas must be calculated using AGA-8 standard, 1994 version. Temperature of gas can
be taken throughout the network as 30 oC in Summer and 20 oC in winter. Standard
conditions at which the gas quantities are given are 1 bar pressure and 15 oC temperature.

Your written report must present your stepwise results for the following. Weight breakup for
all the sub-tasks is equal. You could consult Prof. Moharir on this task on 31-07-2017, 2-6
PM, if required.
If you pipe network can sustain the given flow rates, then

2.1 Determine the delivery pressure at all the user nodes, ToPs and PRSs in Summer.
2.2 Determine the delivery pressure at all the user nodes, ToPs and PRSs in winter.
2.3 Determine the Line pack in SCM in the above network during summer.
2.4 Determine the Line pack in SCM in the above network during winter.
2.5 Determine the maximum and minimum linear velocities in the network in summer and
winter.

Make suitable assumptions if you must. However, specify your assumptions with some
justification of the same. You may use any suitable equation to relate friction factor to
Reynolds number. You could also use Panhandle A or Panhandle B equation as appropriate
to relate pressure drop to pipe specs and gas properties.
